Hi and welcome to OH! I'm in Brooklyn and chose Dr. George Ferzli beacuse of his excellent reputation (7 times mentioned in NY Mag Best Doctors), experience (he has patents on laparascopic equipment and regularly performs both RNY and Lap Band) and the comprehensiveness of his bariatric program (nut and psych on staff, regular support groups and plastic surgeon).
That being said, during my research I came across many exellent NYC surgeons and programs. Columbia-Presbyterian has a great program as does St. Lukes (Dr. Julia Texeira). These are just two of many; we are lucky in NYC to have excellent medical options.
I encourage you to do as much research as possible and check with ASBS (American Society of Bariatric Surgeons) to see if your surgeon works out of a Center of Excellence (mine does at Lutheran Hosp). Also, check with your insurance company to make sure that they cover WLS and see which programs/surgeons are covered.
Also, it mattered to me how I was treated by the staff. I ultimately chose Dr. Ferzli because his staff felt more welcoming to me than any of the others I had spoken with. I was pretty thorough and spoke to many. And one final thing, depending on how busy the surgeon is, you may not be able to get a consultation appointment for months, so that may be a factor as well.
Good Luck!

Hi!
When I finally decided to begin this journey, my local doctors were not able to do the surgery. I was originally referred to Dr. George Fielding at NYU. I did a good deal of research on him & his counterparts, you can check out his website, there is a great deal of info on him...quite impressive IMO. My insurance did not cover him, though, as I have an HMO & am required to stay within network. I ended up going to Rochester, NY...but was quite impressed with what I read about the program at NYU. I did not meet anyone, though, in person....so I cannot honestly tell you...I also did not research any other surgeons in the NYC area.
Whoever you decide to go with, good luck. It is quite a trip.

I didnt think to ask those around me when i first started around here. Dont know why looking back but its neither here nor there.

This has a list of surgeons and patient reviews. I ultimately chose Dr. Alan Geiss on Long Island for my surgeon because of his reviews and I found they were all spot on!
So you might be able to get a few prospectives this way.
Good luck and keep us updated. If you every need anything we are just a post away!

mount sinai is an awesome choice. That is where I am getting mine done in May. The people are wonderful and they walk and hold your hand through everything. They call me at least once every 2 weeks if they have not heard from me to check up on me and they call to tell me everytime they recieve every piece of paperwork. Also I love them because they accept my insurance and has a policy not to balance bill if my insurance doesnt pay my doctor te full cost!
The doctors name is Dr. Daniel Herron. Look into him and feel free to chat with me if you ever need someone to talk to.

cool thanks. i was looking into this one cuz its the closest one to me and im not having much help from my family so im pretty much doing this by myself and to see someone else who is going there helps alot.
What insurance you have? i called my doctor and asked if my insurance covered the surgery and they said it should but once i get all these meetings and appointments with they will tell me if it covers it.
not so helpful but its better then nothing i guess.

I have 1199 for insurance, it can also go under the title SEIU. I understand your problems with family as my family doesnt understand my struggles. My mother has it easy as when she decides she wants to lose weight she just does it. For me its not that easy and I try and try and usually fail in the long run. If you ever need someone to talk to or just a friend, Im here.
I just had my surgery with Dr. Julio Texiera at St. Lukes Hospital I must say that the procedure went great!! I considered him because of his extensive resume and how many procedures he has done. He also has a webcam on how he performs the surgery. All you have to do is Google St. Lukes Hospital Bariatrics in NY and you will find the connection to him as well as other doctors. I hope this helps...
