I also had O'Malley - you are in very good hands! I am just over a year out an have never had any problems at all. The whole journey has been a breeze for me so far. Just follow the Dr.'s orders and you'll be fine. You must be getting very excited as your day is getting so close.

Ya someone out there with the same dr as me! How much have you lost so far? which surgery did you have? I am having the rny. Yes I am getting excited! Was there much pain afterword?  when did you go back to work? Was the people in the hospital nice? Sorry for all the questions!

I have lost 135 lbs so far and I also had the rny. I had absolutely no pain after the surgery at all. I never needed any of the pain medication in the hospital or that they sent me home with. It just felt like I had done a ton of sit ups and my stomach muscles felt sore.

I was out of work for 4 weeks. I could have gone back sooner but I really wanted to enjoy some time off as I never get that much time off with pay ever!

The staff at Highland were great but my room mates were not so great. They really seemed to be having a much harder time than I did with the surgery. I felt bad for them! Maybe I was just one of the lucky ones that didn't have it so bad. I had my surgery at 3pm and was up walking the halls by 11:30 that night. And I walked all the time!! Maybe that was the difference between me and my room mates - they never walked let alone left their beds. So if you can walk as much as possible - it will help you feel better and stronger!

I had surgery 4 months ago (RNY) at Highland.  I have lost more somewhere around 85 lbs.  I did not have much post-op pain but did have a GI hemorrhage that kept me in the hospital for 4 extra days.  Even weak from the blood loss, I was able to get up and walk the hall in the hospital.  I ended up needing a transfusion but have not had any long term problem related to this peri-operative complication.

I was home from work for 3 weeks - got bored.   Make sure you walk once home too.  I quickly progressed from 15 minutes (out-of-breath) to now feeling very comfortable walking fast (without holding on) on the treadmill.

The first 4 weeks were the hardest - lots of regrets and worries.  I found it hard to get in enough water each day.  I bought lots of protein samples but ended up liking EAS Myoplex Lite - Chocolate Fudge which is available at Wegman's.  I have had no problems with vomiting or nausea.

It seemed like it took forever to get back onto non-pureed food (9 weeks) but since being back on food I have not felt the least bit deprived.  I try to follow the rules most of the time and have had no severe dumping syndrome episodes.  I do recognize that I have mini-dumping episodes though after poor choices, eating too fast or too much - weakness, lightheadness, sweating, pouch discomfort.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

HI I'm from Rochester Too.  Dr O'Malley will be my doctor.  I was originally with Dr Boss who just passed away.  Everyone at Highland so far has been fantastic.  I backed out of the RNY 18 months ago at Unity Hospital but am sooooo glad I looked into Highland, what a difference.

Keep us updated on your surgery, we are here for you!!!!

I have another question as I seemed to have stumbled onto a few Dr O'Malley patients.  How long did it take for you to get a date after seeing him, and how far out was that date?  Just wondering if I'm looking at a two weeks, a month or three months?

Hi, I had my RNY with Dr. O'Malley in December of 2007.  I don't know how the schedule is running right now, but when I saw Dr. O'Malley, the surgery schedule was quite soon after the visit.  I had my visit with Dr. O'Malley during the first week of November.  I was offerred a surgery date for about 12 days after the visit.  I was taking college courses and was worried that the surgery and recovery would interfere with me completing my course work, so I requested a later date.  I was scheduled for December 11.  So, based on my experience, the surgery date is not too far out from the doctor visit.

I do have to add that this was during the time that Dr. Boss was still active in the practice.   It's possible that the loss of Dr. Boss may have created a backlog.  The office staff may be able to give you a better idea about the current situation.

Good luck.

Ann A.

Thanks for the quick update Ann A.  12 days would be phenomonial!!! But probably not realistic.  I'll have to eagerly await the phone call.  My husband and I wanted to try to sneak in a vacation in the next month to somewhere warm and before I have the surgery.
