Yeah I'm surprised you don't have a pre-op diet but I guess every surgeon is different and maybe your BMI is less and don't need it.  It sounds like you aren't missing anything!  You have to let us know how your surgery goes...Only a week to go! Yay! I'm sure you will do great.

Jenn,
How does one get away with no pre-op diet?? Today is my first day of Medifast. I am just drinking my 2nd shake. YUCK! Vanilla and I added a little SF caramel sryup(not enough to disguise taste). Five shakes a day! I'' have to check to see if I can have broth(I don't think so). Even that sounds yummy now. And for 2 weeks!

Lisa,

You'll do fine.  It will be easier in a day or two.  One of my tricks was to use 2 packets for lunch and dinner and put it in the blender with a lot of ice (I hated the vanilla and really only could stand the chocolate) so it came out really thick, almost like ice cream and ate it with a spoon.  Othertimes I would have it more like a drink.

So much of it is mental.  Once your mind accepts that you are not hungry, it will become so much easier.  Make sure you get enough water in, it will help with the weight loss.

Jim,
It does say you can use 2 packets on my instructions. Do you use 6 or 8 oz to make it like ice cream? My blender sucks, it does not chop up the ice good. I just got a food processor for xmas. Can you put ice in those?? I was only able to get 3 shakes in today. I am having a cup of coffee now with a tiny bit of SF creamer. I am hungry but not sure I can do another shake. How come some folks don't have to do any prep??? It also said on the instructions to do a fleet enema for 3 nights leading up to surgery. My gosh, am I going to be able to funtion at work??
Sorry about all the whining,
Lisa

I never really measured how much water I added, I think I probably added more than 8 ounces per packet.  I think I just added about half a blender worth of Ice, added water and the medifast.

A woman I work with had her surgery at AMCH.  She had to loose 10% of her body weight via diet and exercise.  Ellis wants you to loose 10% via medifast.  The belief is that the non fat diet, will help to shrink your liver, therefore the surgery will be easier on Dr. P and therefore yourself.

Jim this is such good info..thanks!  I asked my husband for a nice blender for Xmas for this very reason.  I'm glad I'll get to use it..hopefully it will chop up ice well.

I was so hoping you would say "oh Jen the shakes are SOOO yummy!"  lol Guess I knew better.  I have a feeling I'm going to have to force them down..I tend to not be hungry if something tastes gross..terrible I know.

Hopefully each day will get better for you.

I am thinking that I need to do something, but I am wondering if they didn't suggest anything because I am having lap RNY ??  I have been doing the slim fast thing, but it seems to bother my stomach, but it does work.  But it just seems that everyone I hear about is doing some type of liquid diet.  Is everone already?  It seems like time is just getting closer and closer.  I can't wait for it to be here.  I just keep reading all the information the doctor gave me, making sure I understand whats going on  and what i need to do after.  I went out and got my flintstones vitamins, B12 sublingual, Biotin, Zinc, Vit C and Calcium Citrate chewables, along with the Carnation Instant Breakfast sugar free(really hard to find), a bunch of broth, and I finally found the Containers of Ocean Spray Sugar Free drink mix in Cranberry Apple and a few others in walmart.  As far as current meds I am really not on anything, I have been able to control my Pre-Diabeties with diet and exercise and even my lipids I keep down as best as I can. My BMI is 40.6 I wonder if thats why no liquid diet, but I don't rememenber them even discussing it at the educational seminar.  Hopefully once I have surgery all of this will remain down.  I think I have finally decided that people do not need to know what I am doing, its my business and I really need to take an inventory of my life.  My husband and I are now living in the Adirondack mountains with all the cold and snow, we moved here after living in Florida (we moved back because of the schools in Florida - we had decided we didnt want our daughter of 8 weeks at that time to do to Florida schools)  and way, I want to return to the the sunshine state badly, so that could also be in my near future.  We lived in Wellington, west of west palm beach.  If I had my way we will be back down there by the late spring time, just in time for hurricane season.  Anyway,  good luck and I hope to hear from you soon with great results.

I'm having lap RNY too but my BMI is 50 so maybe your liver didn't need to be shrunk...not sure exactly.  Different doctors doing things much differently so I wouldn't worry about it.  You could ask the doctor why no pre-op diet if you want to reassure yourself or even just do a modified version on your own.  I'm sure it can't hurt.  I still have to purchase all of my vitamins for afterwards but I'm not sure yet what they will have me on.  I've started taking a daily vitamin plus 2000mg of vit D a day per their request because my D is so low, but otherwise they haven't said anything about it.  I still have a ways to go though before my surgery.  Where did you find the carnation sugar free?  Just curious in case I want to pick some up.

I live on the niskayuna/schenectady line but I've grown up in this area my whole life and don't mind the cold at all.  I actually don't think I could handle the heat all of the time...just not in my nature.  It's nice to visit for small doses :)  I'm just curious as to why the adirondack mountains in particular? The snow is definitely a lot worse up there...might even be too much for me lol.

Well good luck again and don't stress...I'm sure everything will go great.  I had my triplets at Albany med and spent 7 weeks in the hospital there and they definitely know their stuff so you are in good hands.

Carnation sugar free (variety pack/chocolate/vanilla), found it in Kmart, so far its the only place I have found it.
Adirondack Mountains, we had a house here on a lake, so figured it was sitting empty so why not...now I remember why.  I actually just applied for a job in Clifton Park, if I get the job we are looking into the Balston Spa area.  WOW TRIPLETS, THATS AWESOME.  GOD BLESS YOU, I have a 4 yr old daughter and an almost 3 yr old son, so I can completely understand you lifestyle.  BUSY...PROBABLY ALWAYS ON THE GO.  thank for the advice, please stay in touch and let me know how you are doing.
