Help!! 20 Days out-sugars creeping back up!

Hey everyone,
I posted this on the diabetes board but got no response...so, I thought I would try here....

Thanks for reading.....

My sugars had gone down from 200's and 300's to normal readings--90's and low 100's. I was sooooo thrilled! It felt so good to be "normal" for once! Plus, I knew it would be so good for my body to not be flooded by high sugars!

So, my problem is that now, regardless of the fact that I have lost 32 pounds since my surgery and 47 all together, my sugars are slowly creeping up....has this happened to anyone?

I know that moving from liquids to mushies and then solid foods would affect my sugars, but I am just getting sooooooo depressed about this. Plus, I am terrified that my sugars will keep going up! I have asked my doc about this and she said that some people need insulin, regardless of their weight--which I know...some skinny people are diabetic, but....I just thought the bypass would be my answer to this problem....

And, I have been watching my carbs as I am supposed to--14 carbs/7 sugars per meal. I go for my proten first before anything else--I'm not perfect, but trying hard! I have had problems getting liquid in--I just can't force myself to drink enough water--I probably get in about 20-30 ounces a day, max....rather than the 64 I am supposed to get--I am trying to add more, but maybe that is the prob? I don't know, but maybe....

So...before surgery I was taking 200 units of Lantus--a once a day insulin. Plus, I was using humalog before meals according to a sliding scale...
After surgery, my doc instructed me to take 100 units a day and to lower it in 10 unit incriments as neccessary--I had gotten down to 70 units a day, but have now needed to go back up--tonight I raised it again to 110 units---which means 2 injections(100 and then 10) and it just makes me sooooo upset!

So, if anybody has any input, I would really, really appreciate it--please tell me if others had this problem!! I just don't know what to do....I guess I will call my doc on Monday to ask her again, but...I would still like input from any of you....

Thanks everyone!   I appreciate you listening--well, reading...
Sadly and Fearfully,
Heather

Congrats Heather on your weight loss so far... remember your body is adjusting to major changes now, hang in there and see where you are in a few months maybe your sugars with readjust back to the normal range.

as far as your H20

I know in the beginning - hot tea (decaf) was very helpful in getting all of my water in ... Soon I was drinking more and more water all the way up to a gallon a day! Make it your goal to drink more water than you did the day before ... you will get there ...baby steps!

again Congrats,
Britt

Thank you, Britt! You always seem to calm me down and put things in perspective for me.

I know that I am going through  lot of changes---I guess I just forget about it, ya know?

I guess I have been lucky so far in that I haven't really had too many problems with foods or with taking pills, etc. Chicken hasn't been too much a friend...but fish has been okay except when too dry. But, overall, I have done ok, I think. But, maybe I have been a little jaded and moved too quickly. I think I need to slow down and take a breath here and there--like between bites LOL Seriously, I guess I need to eat slower...and chew better....which I try, but maybe sometimes forget. I am still adjusting to all of this, so...

As for the water...I will try your tea idea--I have the decaf tea bags...so, maybe that will help. The water is hard to gulp and I end up forcing it down as I fight my gag reflex. Plus, I am now so freaked about getting the water in, I probably drink too fast. I should give myself a couple of hours and then it wouldn't seem so urgent to me and I wouldn't need to drink it so fast.

I thought I was doing great, but maybe I just went too fast. It doesn't mean I have failed--I just need to regroup and to better.

Thanks again! You helped, bigtime!  And, baby steps doesn't seem so bad.. =)

Hi Heather,
Think of what your body has been through over the past few months. Think of how hard it is on a body to go through so many rapid fire changes. As you mentioned, the switch from liquids to solids does affect blood glucose levels. Give your body time to acclimate, lose more weight. Keep doing what you know is right and trust that your body will end up in a better place as a result. There are plenty of plateaus and unexpected changes ahead. Just stick to the healthy path, and you will end up better off for it in the end.

Be patient, and keep us posted!!!
Hugs,
Amy

Thanks Amy! It is really hard to see the numbers up, but I must trust in my docs that they will care for me no matter what I go through. So, I will TRY to relax! LOL Good luck to me with that haha But, I will continue to up my fluid intake and see if that helps.

Thank you again for your help! =)

Hello Hunniebear:  I'm afraid I can't offer you much input onyour sugar problem as I do not suffer with diabetes but I wanted to offer some encouragement to you and tell you that you are doing great! Hang in there, it will get better and you may have a few rough spots along the way, as I believe most of us who have gone through surgery have had.  I also say what the others have said.  Your body needs time to adjust.  The surgery is a huge change and change takes time.
On another note as far as getting your water in: yes this is vitally important.  Without it you can become dehydrated and that is no fun.  Try getting a kitchen timer - (at Walmart or local grocery store) Fill up an 8 oz. (or 16 oz. if you can) and set your timer for 5 minute increments.  Start sipping, put it down, wait, then start up again.  Just reset each time or like when you eat your meal, wait 5 minutes between each sip if you have to and it may take you 1/2 to go it in but then it is done .  Make it a game if you have to.    I found my timer invaluable as far as taking my bites and waiting 5 minutes between each one.  It really works, too! It slows you down and lets your body tell you it is full.  Saves alot of grief from eating too much too fast so why not try it with your water?? Also, can you drink any of the crystal lite type beverages? Try flavoring your water with them.  It will count towards your fluids and maybe make them seem less like a trial and more of a treat - I do not know if you can have them or not, just a suggestion.
I wish you the best and it sounds like you are dong very well, try not to worry too much and give your body a chance to adjust.  Hang in there, ok?  Hugs, Mary (Molly P) p.s. hope this makes sense I didn't edit it just typed on!! LOL!

Hi Mary,

Thanks soooo much for your lovely words! I guess this has all just taken me from cloud 9 and thrown me down in the dumps, ya know? I mean, I know in my heart that it will probably get better. And, even if I still need diabates meds and still need to test my blood, lots of people do, so I guess it wouldn';t be the end of the world. I was just hoping not to have to do all that after this aurgery. But, there I go again, judging it all too soon. I should just sit back and relax and wait. But, relax is not really me! LOL I liked the timer idea. I probably need that for eating too, as I think I have been eating too fast. And, I don't want to start that kind of habit. I've been getting queasy feeling after I eat, not sure why..but maybe I am eating too fast. I do stop when I feel full, so I don't think it's too much quantity, but maybe just swallowed too quickly...

I do like the crystal light drinks, but I find them muuuuuuch sweeter than before surgery. And, if they aren't cold enough, they hurt my throat. I know, I know, I;m a complainer LOL But, I should try them again--maybe a new flavor. I have raspberry lemonade right now but I love Target's raspberry Iced tea--just not sure if it has caffeine. I'll have to check.

So, I guess I should try to relax. Maybe today will be a better day. Maybe I need to treat myself to something. LOL Like a new shirt, in a smaller size... =)

Thank you again...you were very helpful and kind... =)

IT IS TOO SOON TO TELL AND YOU COULD BE TEH 15% WHO DOESNT RESOLVE BUT IMPROVES TREMENDOUSLY.

FOR ME THE FOCUS IS ON LIFESTYLE CHANGES AND HEALTH..NUMBERS BE IT SCALE OR BS MAY JUST BE DEPERSSING, NEW REFAME AND FOCUS CAN HELP! sTRESS ALSO CAN AFFECT SUGARS. YOU WERE ON HIGH DOSES PREOP i WOULDNT EXPECT THEM TO COME DOWN IMMEDIATELY....

Thank you! I hope I am not in the 15%, but even a little improvement is better than nothing! I was so sick prior to surgery and could not get my sugars down at all--not even in the morning, fasting.  So, they are already much better than before surgery and my feet and legs are so much less swollen, etc. Sorry to go into my whole medical history LOL Anyway...Thank you for the statistics--I will TRY to be patient and see if things get better. Maybe as I lose more weight and increase my exercise to a regular schedule and drink more, etc, things will hopefully get even better. Baby steps each day and I will get there....=)

Hugs,
Heather

Heather,

I know it is so disappointing to see your sugars going up (I had diabetes prior to my surgery). You have gotten some great encouragement and advice already. I will second the advice to give it time, you body has been (and is still) going through so much. I am sure you will see more improvement with time.

Btw, to answer another of your posts, I live on Long Island also.
