Has anybody applied for insurance with the express intention of applying for weight loss surgery approval? If so, can you give details?
most insurance companies figure it will take 2-3 yrs to break even on you so they may look at how long you have been with them ? However some companies not knowing what your intentions are will look at it from the point of view that if you have the op it will save them money in the long run so you might have a shot? you would have to approach a company and ask others who are with that company if they know thier policies??
The longest of Journeys start with a single step
(90 lost pre-surgery)

I was on my husbands insurance, but they didn't cover WLS. So when my work had their open enrollment/changes last March, I went ahead and signed up soley for the reason that my work insurance did cover WLS. I had my first appointment 3 weeks from my enrollment date. I ended up switching surgeons since I didn't like the first one too well.. but I had my surgery less than 5 months from the time I enrolled in my insurance. Completely 100 percent covered (well except for a few $20 co-pays for the shrink and nut visits )
Most insurance companies have a set amount of time where they won't cover a pre existing conditon, unless of course you were covered by another insurance company at that time. For instance if you applied for WLS after getting insurance there might be a 12 month initial period where they wouldn't cover any condition related to your weight. There are exceptions, medicare, medicaide and I belive NYS's healthy family program all do not have those types of waiting periods.
