Has anyone experienced........
I was supposed to have surgery tomorrow and it was cancelled because my sugar numbers were too high. My doctor says that I would be able to have surgery in about six weeks. I would like to know if any other diabetics have had this situation? I believe that I was in denial and not kept focus on my diabeties and I guess sabotage my date.

Hey David...
So sorry to hear of your troubles. I too am a diabetic. Before my surgery(which was on Dec.1st) my surgeon wanted me to see an endorcrinologist to get my sugars under control, or at least under a little better control. So, I saw a really wonderful doctor and she gave me a plan of what to do before my surgery date. I would advise that you see an endocrinologist and explain the situation to him or her. Then, maybe they can give you a plan to follow to prepare for your next date. Do you have another date yet? Well, let me know if I can be of any help. =) And, don't beat yourself up about things. It will happen for you, you just have to let things happen and make sure you are healthy enough for surgery. And, just commit to doing what you have to with your sugars to make the surgery happen. It may suck to really buckle down, but it will be well worth it! =) Best Wishes! By the way..I'm in Suffolk County on Long Island...if you are near, I can give you my endocrinologist's name. Let me know.
Best of luck!

Hi Heather......
Thank you for your reply. I have an endocrinologist who has helped me with my sugar. My sugar was good when I saw her last. When I left her, that is when I put matters into my own hands. Of course now I am paying for it. Today I spoke to the doctor and she gave me more meds for the sugar and will see what happens. Over the weekend I have been working hard to get it better and now I hope that my doctor's plan will helpeven further.Just to let you know that I am located in Brooklyn but lived in Suffolk County when I was a child, How is your recovery going and what is the diabetes like now after surgery?

Well, good luck with getting the sugars better. It sounds like you had your wakeup call and now you should be able to get things the way they need to be for your surgery. =) Thanks for asking about my progress--I am doing really well. Today was a week since my surgery. Before, my sugars were in the 200's and 300's and even my morning fasting sugars were upper 100's or in the 200's. But, since the surgery, I am verrrry happy to report that I am off my Metformin and no longer need Humalog with meals. Also, I have decreased my Lantus insulin from 200 units to 90 units a day. It's funny, because now that my sugars are more normal, I start feeling light-headed sometimes. I guess my body was so used to higher numbers that now normal feels weird! Anyway, best of luck with your journey--you'll get there when it is right. I waited a loooong time to finally be here, so I understand how frustrating the wait can be!
Hugs,
Hugs,

If you don't mind me asking but just how high were they?
My BMI didn't qualify me for the surgery.. but the diabetes did. Pretty much the whole reason my doctor suggested surgery was to get my diabetes under control, not so much about the weight loss.. I was on 100+ units of insulin a day and still have readings in the high 300's.. My A1C hasn't been under 11 in over 5 years.
I have to say this is the first time I heard of surgery being postponed for high sugar.

When I first saw my doctor my A1C was 7.1. This was in September. When I did my pre op, my A1C was 9.4. The surgeon and the anesthesiologist I was told will not do the procedure unless the sugar was under control. Furthermore, my creatinine increased as well and wanted a letter of clearance from my neuphrologist. The increase was not that much and the doctor said that my kidneys would be fine.
I guess they wanted to be as safe as possible. I must say I find your story interesting also!! I would like to ask my doctor what the complications would have been for me to have the high sugars?
