explain weight loss to me

So I got on a scale and I was down to 340 yesterday morning and today I am at 342 how does this work? I am thinking I am not going to get on the scale more than once a week because it is discouraging.  But if you are not eating how do you gain that much weight? I had not had more than a pind of food yesterday and I thought that the way you lose weight is because any energy that is needed is taken from your fat and then excreted?  Any suggestions on getting on the scale or as I call it the big metal monster?  Am I right to just get on once a week?  I mean I did have a huve weight loss I was 367 before surgery and 340 yesterdaythat is a 27 poind loss in 2 weeks so I guess I should just be happy with that and forget about the scale until next Tuesday.

starving or skipping meals will make it worse, it triggers a defense mechanism in the body that makes you retain weight. the best thing would to have small regular meals at regular intervals, low fat not too many carbs. Salads are your friend right now.... do live and die by that scale because it can fluctuate with a number of things.

The longest of Journeys start with a single step

Oh I know the no starvation rule, I just had surgery a week ago so I am happy just wondering how you can go down one day and up the next when you are eating the same exact things exactly as instructed by the doctor.

Its normal for your body weight to fluctuate a bit. Don't let it get to you! If you can weigh in once per week - same time - same way - whatever your routine is. That would be best.

(I get on the scale pretty much every day - I am addicted!  )

Hugs and CONGRATS on your weight loss so far!

hugs,
Britt

Ok first, if the scale is upsetting you put it someplace that it will be harder to get to so you will only use it from time to time, remember that the first goal is to eat healthy! Weight loss is a benifit from that. I know that is easier said then done for sure!!! I have to admit that it does get to me still and have to remind myself that we can not just go by the numbers on the scale! When we drop weight it can come off in stages (well that is how it worked for me), some weeks I would drop on the scale and others I would notice it in my clothes! Just keep doing what you should be and it will come down.

Also watch your salt intake, that can play a big role in water weight gain!

Take care

Hey Nick! I agree with the other posts...you are gonna drive yourself crazy with that scale. Don't forget also that you are still swollen and have some fluids and stuff like that! 27 pounds in 2 weeks?! Come on now, get off that scale so you can enjoy that! I do not own a scale. I gave it up quite some time ago. But I am lucky and I live across the street form my mom and I use her scale once a week ONLY! Mark it down and move on! And for crying out loud...enjoy the rewards. Just let your mind and body do what they gotta do now, and allow yourself to enter the no stress zone.
 cool beans daddy-o!

The scale is a strange thing.  It varies greatly throughout the day, depending on if you have eaten, drank, exerciesed, used the bathroom and what you are wearing.  One day I got on the scale about 6 times from the time I got up in the morning until I went to bed at night and I had about an eight pound variation in my weight.  Did my "weight" actually change, no way.  Just goes to prove no number is an absolute.

Both my wife & I have also noticed that you will have a period where you will not loose weight on the scale, but all of a sudden your clothes are too big and you have lost inches.  We call this the body catching up with the weight loss.

I feel it is important to look at so many different aspect of this change to really guage progress.   Weight, inches, how you feel, how you feel while exercising, gaining muscle, loosing fat, being able to do more when you exercise.  You have to gauge the progress, by the effect on your life.

Good Luck
