Less than 24hrs to go

So its less than 24hrs away and I'm excited but I'm scared too. Of course its to be expected since this will be the first time I've had any kind of major surgery (teeth pulling doesn't count right?).     My main concerns are Blood Clots, Bowel Movements (the whole wiping situation w/cuts all over my stomach) and taking showers (I have a tub so its not a flat surface and even now I'm afraid of slipping).

I'm taking a cab early morning to to the hospital and I'll be alone through everthing, I dont mind much. I would have wanted my oldest sister there but I didn't ask cause she's thousands of miles away, she's a nurse that works 12hour shifts and has a 4 yearold.  And the surgery is only 2hrs tops so...

I'm also kind of anxious to find out what the pain will be like, I want to just hurry up feel it just to stop thinking about what it will be like (if that makes sense)  Did anyone else do it alone?  What things did you take to the hospital, like tooth brush, slippers, etc. did you forget something wish you hadn't?

I pretty much did it by myself also. While I had my sister bring me to the hospital and my brother-in-law drive me home, I told no one else about the surgery.  I recovered by myself at home and it really wasn't all that bad. I was lucky that I had absolutely no pain and never needed any pain medication. I just took it really slow around the house and rested and watched TV a lot. In fact I felt so good on the day that I came home that I took a shower and then drove myself to the grocery store to get my prescriptions filled. Just remember to listen to your body and take it slow when you need to.

While this was my first surgery also I was amazed as how easy it was - I was expecting much worse and a lot more pain and discomfort. I just kept focusing on the positive and tried not to dwell on the negative. They gave me shots in the stomach for the blood clots and actually those hurt more than the surgery as they burn when you get them and give you big bruises - but a small price to pay! Walk as much as you possible can and then walk some more! That was the best advise that I ever got. It really does make your recovery easier. In fact I walked so many laps around my hospital floor that my calf muscles were burning by the time I got discharged.

The only thing that I used while in the hospital was my chap-stick. Everything else never got unpacked from my overnight bag. I wore the hospital gown and used another one as a robe when I went walking - this was the easiest as I had an IV. I never needed slippers as they gave me slipper socks that I put on when I got there and never took off till the day I went home. The time flies by while you are in there and I just spent all my time either walking or watching TV.

Good Luck on your surgery - I'll say a prayer for you that things go as easy for you as they did for me.

Aww. Thanks Luanna.  Yep. I'm already preping myself to accept the pain positively.  I didn't know about the needles to the stomach for the blood cloths (haven't read it anywhere before).  I did thinkg about the IV and having to walk around with it. but I'm ready for that too.  I know everyone can have different experiences but I hope mines closer to yours in that I dont think the pains bad at all and walk as much as I need to. Thanks for replying it helps to hear uneventful un-bad story about the stay.

yep, you were right...I didn't use much of the bag full of things I brought.  Not toothpate or toothbrush, I didnt even take a shower while there...I didn't like getting up and down. But I did you my lipgloss and my mp3/video player.

Good luck tomorrow!  I have to agree about the chap stick, and just remember to listen to your body and take it easy.

that heparin shot is a witch.  i always warn patients its not the needle that is going to hurt but the burn.  i have yet to give a bruise though.  good luck

I'm not sure if heparin was the blood thinner or the pain meds they gave me both they both burned. I hurt the first time but I got use to it quickly.
