I am having the Gastric bypass- because I have a lot of weight to lose and I want to have the restrictions with my lifestyle change- I feel that with all my health problems already it is going to benifit me to lose it faster rather than slower-
I felt that the Lap bad was not going to be enough for me-
Dr Posner- because he is so strict and he does want his patients to suceed-
He does require a diet-(pro and cons when you want this yesterday)lol
I think its good he requires the patient to be on the south beach to show dedication
He also requires your support person to be their for the senimar- and for your first appt with him -I think this is good for the patient as well as the support person-

I was also in limbo with Dr posner or dr carauna-
Dr posner seemed to be a longer wait to get in for an appt and for surgery(although I didnt want to wait) Patience is a virtue and I am glad that I did wait-
It did take a long time from the start but I am praying it will all be worth the wait---(weight
I hope this helps-

Follow a pre-op liquid protein shake/yogurt/ss pudding and jello for 5 days and you will lose the 2lbs no problem.

Want to know what you mean about restrictions with lifestyle change?  My family is afraid of the death rate? Why did you select this, I very undecided.  Wish people would say what made them decide which surgery. Thank you. God bless Eileen

I'm not sure if you were asking me why lapband but these are the reasons that I chose the lapband over RNY:

I know 3 people that had rny. All have gained much weight back. The stoma can stretch but with lapband you always have an opportunity to get fills to take more weight off  with the band or keep off the weight you lost forever. I have read that people with RNY after many years are getting a revision to Lapband. Of course there are many people that have RNY are very successful but both the band and RNY require lifestyle changes and work.

The lap band has lower mortality rates and is reversible if needed.
There is not re-routing of insides.

Easier recovery and no dumping syndrome- I hate throwing up and the thoughts of never eating sweets again is unfathomable to me.

Can be unfilled to accomodate pregnancy

RNY has malabsorption which means your body is not taking in all of the nutrients you eat.

A large percentage of rny'ers lose their hair in the first year due to malnourishment.

slower weight lose for me means less flab and healthier for the body to adjust.

with rny weight comes off fast- within 8-12 months. Lapband takes work especially in the first 3 months when you may not feel restriction.  Studies show that weightloss between the 2 groups are comparable after 3 years.

I wanted to be able to eat whatever I wanted in smaller portions. Many become lactose intolerant after rny like my cousin. My other cousin can never eat certain veggies like broccoli, never pizza, and never sweets or gets sick.

The lapband has shown good results with people my age with the less amount of weight I need to lose.

This is the best decision for me. You will have to research and see what is best for you. Everyone is different.

Come over to the lapboard forum and ask questions and read. That is a good way to decide. Visit the rny board too. Weight your options and decide which is best for you.

Posner has never lost a patient at the BGH program...atleast not from the RNY.  Amazing eh?  Excellent program with a VERY aggressive follow up (most RNY-ers die from complications post op) If you call with a question or concern post op...HE WILL BRING YOU IN ASAP.  I had a complication, I was fine  :)

Start: 487 lbs (8/07) Lost 81 lbs pre op on South Beach. 406 lbs at surgery (6/08). 179 post op, by 2011. I  lost 308 lbs. Gained 98 while pregnant (2012-13) lost all but 25. My goal is to be 179 again!
