my dilemma
i started this journey to surgery in May - my final hurdle was waiting for the nutritionist. i have my appointment this monday at 10:45. I am in the albany med program. here is my problem. i am a shfit worker 7p - 7a as a nurse at albany med. i have to work sat 7-7, sun 7-7, mon 7-7 and tues 11-7. I tend to bloat up big time when i work nights due to the sleep issue (not getting enough) i live 45 minutes away from amc. i will have to wait around monday til the appointment and then go home and get 2 hours sleep due to kids coming home from school.
i know i am going to weigh more - will this affect my having surgery. this was my last hurdle. i have everything else done.
i have waiting so long.
thanks

Angie,
That is a tough schedule. I would go and check in first thing in the morning and let the staff know your situation so they can pass it on to the Dr. Maybe they will be able to squeeze you in earlier and you can get home and get some sleep. I used to work over nights and I swear for the two years I did it I never had a real night of sleep. I used to say I lived on naps for the entire time. As for the bloating I would explain the situation when you go in. One of my appointments with the nutritionist got confused and it was a mix up on both my side and the schedulers side (long story). Bottom line I got there and they said my appointment had been changed and I did not have an appointment that day. After discussing the problem they were able to squeeze me right in.
Everyone's weight fluctuates through out the day. I tend to weigh more at night then I do in the morning and your appointment is technically at night for your body. Then there are days like I'm having today where I woke up 5lbs heavier then I did yesterday. Yesterday I was better with my fluids and my excersize then I've been recently and yet I wake up to a 5lb gain. Well obviously it's not a gain and just some excess fluid which will disappear as quickly as it showed up. I'm not stressing over it. I don't think you should either. If you're doing everything you're supposed to be doing focus on getting your rest today and tomorrow so that you don't go into Monday being overtired.
Good luck on Monday. You'll have a date before you know it!!

Angie:
Dr. SIngh will tell you (not sure who your surgeon is) that in his experience night shift workers/nirses do not do as well postop longterm..I mention this because it is a consideration not now but longterm for your health and wellness and overall success!
Have you met your 10% wt loss goal? Yes they may postpone if they feel for various reasons you are not ready, it is not all the pounds on the scale, Dr Singh calls it the twinkle in your eye...
I can appreciate what a challenge it will be to make this apt, really you have no control over the scale other than what you decide to eat, drink and exercise (dont laugh I know!)you hav influence but not control....Worry is out attempt to find some control and not usually productive, stress can add to wt gain....and well no one needs that. Letting go, accepting the day for what it will be and surrender to do all you can and figure it our from there, it can be a long journey and it will happen though when it shoudl HUGS! Keep us posted
