fatty liver

I have not had surgery yet, I am in the process of all my appointments and such but I wondered how many of you were told that you had "fatty liver" while going through all of your testing. I have been told that a lot of heavier people have it, or you may have it if you have high cholesteral...but I was jusr curious...for those of you that did have it, does it go away when you lose a good amount of weight after surgery?

Also, does it effect the functioning of your liver? It makes me a little apprehensive...the liver if a definite vital organ!

Thanks,
J

Hi

I to have been diagnosed with fatty liver. Loosing our extra weight will help. It is due to the high fat content of our blood. I am also waiting for approval I have been through all of the pre-testing and Dr Howard is my doctor also.

Have you had a chance to speack to any of his previous patients I am looking for some. Just to ease my mind.

  Keep in touch

I am under the impression that all obese people have a fatty liver (fatter than non-obese), that is why the surgeon puts you on a diet before the surgery (liver shrinking diet or LSD).

It is my understanding that the liver has fat cells like the rest of the body so if you lose the weight, it will also come off your liver.

I was also cautioned not to have a fatty "last supper" before surgery because that could be enough to cause issues for the surgery.  That came from the nurse in the surgeons office.

Last thing you want is a cracked bleeding liver from surgery.

I think like a month before I'm going to start eating extremely well, even better than now, in order to get the liver down. Most of my extra weight sits in my midsection which I have been told is even worse, so I didnt doubt that my liver had fat on it.

I can't wait until the day when my liver is not fatty- as well as the rest of me- lol

thanks for your help! My doctor made it sound to me like it was rare and I have been scared for a while. I have many head aches so I stuff for that here and there and was worried that my liver was not functioning correctly or something.

thanks!!!!!!!

Ya know, it sounds like your head in is the right place.  You are doing all the right things to make sure this does not become an issue for surgery.  I am concerned enough about it myself to motivate me to make sure it's not an issue, but not enough to make me worry or obsess (not saying that you are)

Good luck!

Thanks. I think I worried so much because my doctor didn't tell me a lot of details about it. Plus, when my OBGYN found out my liver enzymes were up, she said she wouldn't even put me on any medicine to help with my pcos, so I kept thinking it must be something terrible. I know that Dr. Simon told me he could feel my liver, which means it's of course bigger than should be when he was examining me, so my main goal before surgery is to drop like 20 lbs to take it down. Not only that, but it'll be a good kick start for when the surgery is over!
