New Year

It is 2.5 years since my gastric bypass (RNY) and one year since my husband bailed out on our marriage. I have since started back at school for my masters degree, kept 120 of the 130lb weight loss off, gotten my kids through the hardest year of their lives, made ends meet, gotten a new puppy (our dog died unexpectedly last year, just before my ex bailed), not had a total nervous breakdown!

I have changed a lot internally, along with the external changes since my surgery. I'd like to hear about the ways in which you have changed internally since surgery, or on the way to surgery. It can be a life changing event, not always easy, but in the end, I believe, worth the effort.

Do tell.....

Wow Amy!  Kudos for keeping the weight off while going through so much stress in your life!   I am in the process of changing my life (I guess it's always ongoing).  I went back to school and finished my bachelor's degree, then decided (at 49 years old) to go to law school.  I am half way through now and love it.  After I started law school, I decided I really needed to do something about my weight.  I didn't want to have to keep worrying about my co-morbidities getting worse and I didn't want to be a fat lawyer, so I had my RNY in July.  So far, I've lost 53 pounds.  I also have some marital issues that are still unresolved (that is a roller coaster ride, and I'm trying to decide whether to get off after 29 years).  I also lost my beloved golden retreiver and I miss her so much!  My daughter got married this past summer and my son is getting married next summer (these are both happy changes).   You are right when you say that change isn't always easy, but most of the time it is worth the effort.  Sometimes we don't always have control over everything in our lives, however we just have to learn to roll with the punches and get back up and make our lives better.  We control what happens next!  Good luck to you!

Wow Jacque! There are a lot of similarities between what you have gone through and my journey! Our golden retriever died one year ago yesterday, and right after that my ex bailed out of our marriage. I am just starting year 2 of a 3 year master's degree (Nurse Practitioner) and it has been very challenging. My friends and family keep reminding me how many changes my body and mind and spirit have been through, and to take it easy on myself. It's sometimes hard to remember that major body and mind changes take a while to catch up to!

If you aren't already, I hope that you and your spouse consider therapy. It can be very helpful.

Congrats on your tremendous success after surgery! 53 pounds! Go Girl! Congrats also on the marriage of your daughter and soon to be marriage of your son. What a sweet time for them and for you.

I don't think folks always realize what changes do occur after a major body transformation like with WLS. It IS a roller coaster ride, and certainly worth the rough and bumpy, but it is just that: a rough and bumpy ride!

Good luck with school! Thanks for your input.

Hugs,
Amy
