Dr. Singh

I am searching out a revision of my RNY form 2002.  Long story short, moved 10 months after surgery, no doctor would follow up with me as they had not done my surgery.  My original surgeon was very new at this I was one of his first 20 patients.  Started at 349, lost to 213, now I am close to 300 again.

I made an appointment with Dr. Singh, the first appointment I saw one of the "fellows" in the office.  Today I had an EGD at Albany Med and met Dr. Singh.  I heard many things about him, one being that he is strict and wants his patients to do well, but he didn't even introduce himself to me and just walked in and started working.  I hope that when I go back for my follow up I get to meet with him.  Is this normal for him?  I also had read that he is nice to work with.

The report he wrote after the procedure says that the results warrant re-evaluation for revision of original bariatric procedure.

Just wanted to know how others liked him?

First off YES I do like him.  Second he is strict and sometimes may come off as not having a very good bedside manner BUT I love him.  I had found that after seeing him for the first time I wasn't sure how to take him BUT I really do like him.  He does warm up to you...I have had RYN on 2/11/08 by him and gall bladder removal on 5/14/08...So maybe cause I have seen him alot I feel that way BUT hang in there I feel he is the best around....BUT when I had my egd he just started working to and I have 2 done by him.....  Take care Bridgit

Thanks for the reply.  I can live with poor bedside manner if he is a great surgeon.  I feel that is more important.  It may have been an off day for him, I was nervous.  You know all that stuff.

Lots of surgeons do not have warm fuzzy bedside manners.  They are basically mechanics.  They deal with patients that are asleep and they are in charge.  If he is good at what he does, that is all that counts.

Did you ever meet an auto mechanic that was warm and fuzzy?

His "bedside manner" annoys the crap out of me.  I do not get the warm and fuzzies from him.  However, I picked him as my surgeon because I really feel he is one of the best in the area at lap RNY.  He is really thorough with preop testing.  He just did my surgery 8/13.  He worked through adhesions and hanging mesh from a prior hernia repair to do my surgery.  Everything appears to be okay.  He just did surgery in July on an extremely obese 600 plus man in Saratoga using robotic surgery.  He is on the cutting edge of this technology.

I don't think he is unpleasant; he is just somewhat abrupt and patronizing, I find.

I recently had my first pre-op meeting with him. I had lots of questions and concerns. I was first greeted by a resident working with him who worked through my history, etc. I figured he was just going to pop in, hammer out a quick review, and be done.

When he came in, he seemed abrupt as everyone mentions, but I pushed forward with some discussion. From questions I was asking, he seemed to narrow down to some concerns I had. To be honest, he really helped me to firgure out my concerns more concretely. He also laid out some honestly frank options then took the time to give me some great insight into my exercise routines and ongoing pre-op weight loss.

At the end of the meeting, I really felt like he helped me a great deal. He was a lot better than I expected.

Dr. Singh did my surgery in April and I was 654 lbs at the day of the surgery. When I first met him I was 744 lbs. and he laid it on the table for me exactly how things were. Nothing was sugar coated and it took me a while to understand the reasons why he does the things the way he does. The fact is that he makes sure that u make the lifestyle changes needed for the surgery to be successful. He may not seem the most personable but every day I am thankful for what that man did for my life.

Thanks for the replies.  I appreciate the time you took to answer.  I am feeling better after reading these posts.  I can handle someone who is going to give it to me straight.  I sometimes need that as I can be a bit stubborn.  I can't wait to go back to see him to get a chance to really talk to him.
