I am having a real battle over here with edema in my lower legs. I mean, My legs are so swollen....STILL....and I dont know what to do. I am trying my best to avoid salt/sodium foods....and am TRYING to get my fluids in...but the fluids are going straight to my legs. I am so sore and so weak from walking around with these elephant legs. Now Edema is kicking in. I really don't like it. It is limiting my mobility.

Hi Tim - I suffer with edema in my lower legs also.  It is a challenge especially on warm days.  Do you elevate them at all when you are resting? I find this helps some.  Maybe also try a little massaging?   Also, someone mentioned to me that I might also have a condition known as "lymphedema"  which differs from just edema.  (Not sure just how)  I know also that there are special stockings that you can either be fitted for or perhaps at a medical supply shop you can purchase which help support the lower legs and help keep the edema at bay.
Have you talked with your doctor at all about it? Perhaps they could give you some sort of fluid pill which might initially take care of some of the fluid .  I have one to take when I start to swell up which isn't all the time.  In the mean time, not to sound like a broken record, but keep on drinking!  (water, especially, maybe try iced tea, too).
I feel your pain! I know how hard it is for me to walk and I haven't yet had my surgery but my lower legs are a problematic area and always have been.  Hang in there! I am sure you are doing everything right and this will dissipate but if not, check with your doctor ok? Take care Molly P. (Mary)

Yes I too have the battle with edema.  I have cut out everything with salt and drink nothing bu****er.  I havent had my surgery so this edema is weighing me down and can become a problem with my surgery.( i hope not though).  Its definately a pain in the rear end.

I have noticed today that my legs hurt alot  too,  when I get up and walk and especially when I climb stairs.  I do feel your pain.  I take lasix but its not working as well as I would like.  Its probably going to be like this as long as its warm.  Try to hang in there.  I know it is painful but my dr says to get up and move around some, and keep my legs up.  He also says stay under air conditioning.

Lasix, Hdtz, etc...none do the trick. Maybe I need to take a few days and just lounge around. keep my feet up....sit by the pool (not that I have one) and sip on some decaf sugar-free iced tea....hmmm.....sounds like a plan...I will put it on my schedule...for....I dont know....September? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

yea me too.  I kinda laughed at my Dr about, the putting up the feet.  I have an active 4 year old.  My "putting the feet up" days are over!

So far I have only tried Lasx and I am only up to 40mg dailey.  Dr doesnt want to hike them up too fast.  I wish he would, like sometime before my pre-op appointment!  I am petrified they will cancel my surgery.

hey I'm ready to join you on that - why I even have my own floatie (my stomach!! LOL!  Another tinteresting observation  - I had water physical therapy for about 8-10 weeks and all while I was doing it my legs were great! The swelling kept down, I was walking better and with less pain and I think one of the therapists said it was due to the resistance in the water and how it works your muscles, etc.  I had to discontinue the therapy (I did too well, too quickly !) and anyway, about 2 weeks after it the swelling started to gradually come back again - so... maybe we could start a fund for the Swell Legs  Association? Then with the money we collect we could build a community pool for our use!! Donations???? Take care Mary: :)

I am a nurse and on my feet all day, and with this heat, my ankles are so swollen...it sux!  when i get home at nigt i try to elevate them.  if your on your feet you can also try to wrap them with ace wraps...from the foot to the knee...or ask your doc about compression stockings.  i auctually gained 2 lbs last week from the edema, i hate it!!!  i hope your feeling better soon!!!
