Albany Med Center ??s
For those of you who had your surgeries done at Albany Medical Center - after surgery, were your roommates bariatric patients? Do they have a bariatric floor? I ask this because a few years ago I had a hysterectomy at St. Peters and I had roommates from hell. They didn't have enough room for me on the ob/gyn floor, so they stuck me somewhere else. It was awful! My first roommate was an elderly lady with alzhiemers who would scream and physically fight with the nurses (she actually bit one) every time they came near her. My second roommate had impacted bowels! Ewwwww! The smell was sickening!! I just don't want to have to deal with that type of situation after WLS.
E4 where they send their bariatric patients is also a trauma floor. They do try to room bariatric patients together, but it is not a guarantee. Luckily your stay in the hospital is brief and only a small part of your WLS journey.
Good luck!

Good luck!

The very nature of healthcare makes situations such as this unpredictable, overflow happens all the time as beds can be a scare luxury at times in hospitals. This has happened for years, despite a floor or wing being dedicated to a specialty the reality is adults get put on peds, medical pts get sent to a surgical floor etc due to a variety of factors mainly staffing and availability, can not predict each day how many of this or that type of beds one needs. As a nurse I have seen this working my past 15+ years. ALM as others points out sends patients to E4 typically the trauma floor that does most of the bariatric patients, but a wing for this is not feasable mainly as at most there may be typcially 3+/- surgeries done a day (it would be a small wing!). Roommates are a luck of the draw, people are ill in the hospital and even the nicest person can have a personality change when in a helpless situation such as the hospital and illness on top etc. No one is reat with loss of control! Elderly can get more confused, convicts still get treatment etc. I had a bad roommate honestly a demented woman who screamed all night! Kept gettingout of bed putting call light on and TV loudly, she didnt do it on purpose of course I got upset, frustrated and was tired. They did move me or her can not reacall when able later in night...I was in tears so tired! I have heard others with worse stories, but as with life we can not control the events per se but we can our experience of things. In the larger scheme I woould sit for 10 more nightd with that woman to receive the health, wellness and opportunity that WLS has afforded me. NOTHING can take that away, the roomie is a distant memory that is so outweighed by the positive, it is forme how I frame it.
Although we may not want to deal with others it is a small piece of this journey on our way...stinky eww wellyou may be that person after wls be aware!!!
For me it was one opportunity to have compassion for others, speak up for my needs (to be moved) and acceptance of the things I can not control, a never ending lesson we all get in life! Be well.
