Psychological exams -- potential for scamming patients?
I'm pre-surgical, going through the preliminaries. My surgeon (Orange Co. NY) appears to have an excellent reputation, but one of the psychologists he recommends (from nearby Pike Co., Pa.) who the surgeon has used for years and continues to recommend for the psych. eval. has actually lost his license to practice in Pa. due to ethical violations. This, understandably, makes me apprehensive. The other area that makes me hesitant, is that the psychologists the MD recommends all have the eval. done in 30 minutes -- and charge $250 out of pocket, and we were told during our initial seminar that our insurance won't cover it. When I questioned that with the office staff, I was warned that "some psychologists" outside their recommended few would require us to go through months of counseling, insinuating that the other psychs were out for the money. But isn't $250 for a so-called 30 min. evaluation just as questionable? I called my insurance, and got the name of an area counselor who will do the evaluation under my insurance, in two visits. Is it possible the surgeon is not aware of the Pa. psychologist's licensing issue? Right now I'm frightened that rocking the boat will cause problems that may make the surgeon not want me as a patient, and I need this surgery. I need reassurance or advice from anyone who has experienced this situation.
I did not feel that I got anything other than clearance for surgery from my psych visit. Mine took a total of 15 or 20 minutes. I was lucky that my consult was covered by my insurance. I joked with my wife that I would love to see the report he wrote and that it is probably 20 pages long!
Good luck
Jim
