Doctors in NYC

I am in the process of selecting a doctor for my hopefully upcoming WLS. After checking with my insurance and resear*****luding reading some of the reviews on this site, I narrowed it down to George Fielding (or any doctor in his practice) at NYU, Mitchell Roslin at Lenox Hill, and Alfons Pomps at Cornell. I will be attending educational seminars at NYU and Lenox Hill and have an consultation with Dr. Pomps. Has anyone had any experiences with these doctors? I still have not completely decided which WLS I want, but I am leaning towards a lap band. However, I am open to having a RNY if the doctors think it is best. Megan

Hi Megan, I had my surgery with an associate of Dr. Pomps, Dr. Dakin.  I thought they have a great practice and staff.  Went through surgery with no problems, and had a great hospital stay.  Best of luck on your journey.

hiya! i had my surgery performed by dr mitchell roslin at lenox hill.   he was NOT my first choice.  i had, in fact, chosen another doctor closer to me, because i live in brooklyn.  however, this doctor operated out of a hospital that refused to allow him to operate on me because of my co-morbidities.  i was referred to 2 alternate offices - the cornell office and the lenox hill office.  like you, i refuse to allow anyone to provide my medical care without me having done my own 'due diligence'.  i considered it a sign that dr roslin had gone to the same specialized high school i did, and so did another on his team.  they were also ivy-educated, but yet,  aren't snobs.  when i met dr roslin, i was impressed.  not only is he perfectly candid, but he explains every aspect thoroughly.  he answered many of my questions before i asked them, and the few questions i did have after were quickly dispatched.  i went into the OR on 6/3/08 calm, unafraid, and perfectly confident that everything was going to be just fine.   and it was!  to date, i have had no pain, and i have lost 24 lbs! i feel better than i have in the past 14 months, before i had my 2 heart attacks and stroke. not many have the co-morbidities i had, and few doctors have the knowledge or confidence to even deal with it.  i thank God every day for doctor roslin.  he gave me my life back. NOTE:  when you go to their seminar, go into it with an open mind. the team there does a wide range of WLS procedures.  be sure to ask their opinion as to which one is right for you.  you may find, as i did, that perhaps another procedure may fit your needs better.  JUST A THOUGHT... whatever your choice, good luck, and best wishes. dee

dr roslin did my lap ryn and i adore him as well as his staff. i saw 8 different doctors in nyc before i met dr roslin and there isn't anyone else i wanted to touch me. his staff is second to none and they know their stuff. and UNLIKE all the other doctors i saw they DO NOT force or try to shove any particular surgery down your throat they give you the facts and you decide.

201 pounds lost since surgery!! And I'm 2 1/2 inches taller too!!

And YES I still eat Carbs and Fats but I know what portion control is!!

Megan, They are all excellent surgeons and I don't think you will go wrong with any of them.  That being said, I would recommend Dr. Pomp highly,  I had my surgery with Dr. Pomp, and I think the world of him and the practice.  Let me know if you have any questions. Btw, the first Wednesday of each month Cornell holds a support group meeting the pre-ops are welcome to attend.  It is a good opportunity to meet people who've had surgery and ask questions. Mary

I had Dr Shah for my DS... He's a partner of Dr Roslin.  While I can't speak directly about Roslin, he DID visit me a couple times during my stay at Lenox Hill (I think they take turns doing post-op followup in the hospital).  Roslin was a very nice guy and took his time, even though I wasn't exactly "HIS patient". My stay at Lenox Hill was good.  The staff was pretty good as my stay was as pleasant as could be expected considering I was recovering from surgery. They have a new partner in the practice now (Dr Yatco).  I can't speak anything of him as he joined fairly recently. Roslin and Shah do the DS, RNY, Band, and VSG Yatco (last I heard) does RNY, Band and VSG... but not the DS Best of luck to you.

I too visited 5 dr's in brooklyn and NYC, and absolutely fell in live with Dr. Roslin. As everyone says you won't go wrong with any of them. From My experience MD Roslin really gives you the facts and you come to a decision together. He repects you intelligence and his staff repects your time. I'm extremely impressed with them.  Gigi

Good Day I had my surgery done at NYU on June 9,2007 My Dr  was Christen Ren Fielding, I have to tell you she is a wonderful Dr, as well as her staff, each any everyone in that office is WONDERFUL!!!, To make a long story short I live in Melbourne Florida moved here 7 months ago from Long Island NY, My Insurance is terrible here, and I am in need of a bilaterial knee replacement and no one will do it until I lose 100plus pds, so I started  looking into bariatric facilities and it was the best decision I have ever made, I now travel once a month to NY  for my follow ups, I look for specials in airline tickets but going to NYU is worth it...... Good Luck......If you have any further questions Please do not hesitate in asking..... I hope this helps.....Have a nice day...

Dr. Ren did my surgery at NYU. They do mostly Lap Band at NYU, but when I told Dr. Ren that I wanted RNY and why, there was no problem. She did not try to "push" Lap Band on me. I am very happy with her skills as a bariatric surgeon and was completely at ease going into surgery.

I've heard wonderful things about all of the surgeons you mentioned. Go to the seminars and meet with the surgeons so you can make the best decision for you.
