For all those who go to the Highland hospital bariatric clinic.  Before you had your surgery did any of you gain any wait before you had surgery?  I am having an awful time with water retention.  I am currently on Lasix but its not doing the job.  Its been really worrying me, that they will cancel my surgery if I have gained any.

they didnt weigh me the day of my surgery while i was awake... i say that because they say they know how much i lost since surgery so i am wondering if they weighed me somehow after i was  out but i dont see how?  i was expecting a weigh in the day i showed up but they didnt do one they just got me prepped for surgery and away i went

How about at the Pre- op appointment, before the surgery?  I have some time before my actually surgery.  I worry every weigh in.  I think one time they added another visit because I gained 2lbs that was clearly edema,  If you press on my ankles is stays pushed in for a bit.  The last couple of visits I had lost each time.  But summer is upon us and I really start to back on the water. my feet get huge.

Hello,

I am Tim...I STILL suffer from Edema. It got to be so bad...that I honestly gained 15 lbs of fluid between approval and surgery. I don't know about your surgeon, but Dr. Singh went ahead and did mine. Edema has and always will be an issue. I enjoyed about 2 weeks of my legs being "low-edema" but then it has recently come back with a vengance.

I know how you feel (in that area atleast)....keep on trying...keep on trucking....

first of all they do weigh you at the pre op meeting  and i have to say if you are taking your fluid pill regulary edema shouldnt be an issue i have very severe edema in both legs. Sometimes i think its a convienent excuse i know i have it but if you are being strict with your diet and your water pills are working then you should still be losing. Both my legs are so bad i couldnt fit them in most pants because the lower leg was so big and i cant wear most shoes because the hang down over the top of the shoes.i am certainly not an expert but i have had it for past 4-5 yrs and i know how it goes. When i thought i was going to be close on a weigh in i would weigh myself every day and i lived off salad every meal for a week it was hard but it worked.  good luck to you dr johnson is a nice guy and a very good surgeon

my doctor is still teeking my dosage with the lasix, He says he doesnt want to give me a high dose right away.  I think he is trying to see if I respond to it.  I only am taking 30mg. daily.  He says its from having sleep apnea.  I also have copd.  I have only started swelling with in the last few months so this is fairly new.  In the past I swelled during the summer and it only affected my feet.  Now the swelling goes up into my knees so bad I can't bend my legs.  I had to take a short break from salad.  I was getting really bored.  If you could give me some ideas of some good meals i would appreciate it.  I have had a really bad cold and I have noticed that the swelling gets worse when I have colds or anything that affects my breathing. My last couple of visits to the dietician and Surgeon, the night before I was weighing 285lb (according to my scale)  The next day I went into Rochester and weighed 278lb.  Then the next time again weighed 283 according to my scale then went in a weighed 276lb.

well as far as salads go always make sure there is some meat on it for protien, i personally did a lot of spiedie salads . Also Walden Farms is a brand of salad dressing that has 0 calories, no sugar, 0 carbs gluten free it is good and you can pour a bunch on without adding cals to the meal. some people develope a tolerance to lasix and my doc didnt want to put me on it in case i needed it when i was older she had me on diovan hct it kept my bp in check and removed water as well as far as the edema i know...mine went up to my knees and makes walking very very hard. i had the sleep test and they say apnea is severe if you stop breathing 30 times in an hour and i was 22 so i was pretty close to severe but as you lose weight that will get better as well. also try not to over do it on starch breads etc  the reason people lose weight on the adkins is when you go high protein and very little starch the body will go through what they call keytosis and weight will start to fall off. you still need carbs but too many will stop the process

I went to my regular PCP today and he saw that I am still retaining fluids.  So he upped my prescription to 40mg.  But he did say that he wants to be sure I am not using the pills to lose weight to make sure I am not gaining.  I was actually hurt by this.  When you push my leg is stays pushed in.  Can't fake that!.    I think the only thing I may be guilty at is when I eat foods that have some sodium in it.  I use salt sense and mortons salt, but he said he wants me to totally cut sodium out.  So here I go.  I did find that salad dressing!  boy its expensive! I keep hearing about Medifast.  Can anyone tell me anything about it?  Thanks
