East End of Long Island - Changed My Mind
Thanks to all of you for your responses! Karen3, thanks for telling me about your revision experience. So, what I'm getting from you is that with the bypass, your stoma is smaller and there are "stuck" experiences if you do not chew well and slow down - same as the band? I notice some bypass patients have banded RNY and some don't. Which is recommended? In your opinion, do you feel there is less "experimental" eating as opposed to the Band? What I mean is, if chicken goes down easily on Wednesday, will the same meal go down easily on Saturday? I probably sound neurotic, but I'm terrified of "vomiting" regularly. I do understand it's not a real vomit - more of a regurgitation - still scary, I think I would have panic attacks if it happened on a regular. Yes, I wish they could also give me a brain bypass with the operation! For me the excessive eating is definately addictive behavior and I would be doing therapy in conjunction with WLS.
Thanks everyone!
Maria
PS - Yes, love my sweets...

Hi there...not sure what you mean by that..."banded RNY" Do you mean Lap RNY, which means laprascopic RNY? There are some people who did not achieve their desired weight loss with RNY or regained some or all of their weight after some years and chose to have a lap band placed, but that is not a simultaneous procedure. RNY can either be done "open", which just means you're cut open like in traditional surgery or "lap", which is laproscopically, through punctures in your abdomen using instruments and cameras. Most of the time it is done "lap" but I know of one doctor who always does "open" and every "lap" procedure, be it RNY OR BAND, can turn from "lap" to "open" during the procedure itself if the doctor feels it's necessary.
My band was completely removed before the RNY was performed.
For me, there is a lot less experimental eating with the RNY, but everyone is different. It does take a while before most foods are tolerated, as in several months if not longer. THere are some RNY'ers who can't ever tolerate certain foods--everyone is different.
It's just my personal opinion, but if I had it all to do over and knew how easy it is to cheat the band with sweets, I would have originally chosen the RNY.
