I had my surgery on a Thursday afternoon and was home before noon on Saturday.  I found that I had very little pain and really did not take much pain medication. You will be given a button to push should you need pain medication while you are in the hospital.  I really main had pain when getting out of bed or chair.  I was out of work for five weeks, but probably I could have gone back sooner if Michelle did not have her surgery 3 weeks after mine and if I did not have the sick time to get paid for the whole time.  I was home with our 9 & 11 year old boys the following week and I did fine.

I really expected to feel worse after the surgery.  I think one of the reasons I was not overly tired is that I was walking a couple of miles a day before surgery, so my body was ready to walk after the surgery.

If you have any other questions, just let me know.

Hi Amy, I had Dr.Clark do my surg on friday 5/2/08 at 6:30am,in the OR at 7:30 ,out by 10:30 and dr clark was telling my husband that I was in recovery. Everything from 10:30 to 4pm is still a little hazy, but my husband said I was happy and sleepy. The only problem I had(if you could call it that) was that my PCA pain pump was set to high for me and everytime I pushed the button I got dizzy.I told the pain MD and they turned it down.A few things to rememder to bring with you.Have who ever is going to see you post op bring chap stick and ask for green mouth swabs, your mouth will be like the Sahara desert.A good pair of slippers ,easy to slip on to take your freq. walks.Do not be overwhelmed by the iv pump ask the RN to show you how to pack it up so you can walk w/o help.I had a robe with a pocket in the front that came in very handy to put my JP drain during my walks, also it covered my butt.Ear plugs and sleeping mask in case your room mate is a night owl, mine was,I would have never slept w/o those. My husband enjoyed crystal light in a big bottle of H2O, that I got at the hosp,he had surg on 4/10/08(jdm511,jim) I loved Dr Clark he made me feel so at ease that I did not  think of being nervous.Surg. is like you go to sleep and wake up from a good nights rest, except you have a button in your hand when you wake up.Push the button as soon as you wake up even if you are not in pain,I did and I never really had that much pain.REMEMBER WALK,WALK WALK!!!! The more you walk the better you feel and the faster you get home. Any questions just ask and good luck,HAPPY THOUGHTS Michelle
