Endoscopy

I had what should be my last appointment with my surgeon before surgery.    I have two more things to get done and then everything will be going to insurance for approval.   (and from what i've been told my insurance has a very quick turn around.. approval in 24 hours is very common)  I have an ultrasound to check out the ol' gall bladder and the endoscopy scheduled for next week. I'm a little frightened of the endoscopy and I'm not even totally sure what it is.   From what I understand they put a wire with a camera down your throat?   :(   Just the sound of that makes me cringe.   I have a hard time just brushing my back teeth, taking major gag reflex..    I just can't even imagine sticking something down my throat.    What can I expect ??   Is it really as bad as it sounds?   Do they put you to sleep for it?  Any info is greatly appreciated.

I had my endoscopy on Monday. I was no big deal at all. I will admit that I had all of the feelings that you are going through. You are put out - with an IV.  The whole thing from coming to the hospital until I left was less than 2 hours. The actual procedure was only about 15 minutes. I just needed someone to drive me home. Don't worry!

Good Morning, I am having my gastroscopy this morning.  Its really a safe and quick procedure.  You won't feel a thing. The doc will give you medication to put you in "la-la land"  I am praying that mine does not show that I have H pylori or my surgery will be postponed.  Good luck and keep in touch.........Stella

I have had 14 Upper Endoscopies or Gastroctopies (depending on who you have, they call it different thingsin the last 3 years. You have NOTHING to worry about.  The WORST you'll have is a scratchy throat.

They put an IV in your arm (usually right) and hang fluid.   They wheel you in, have you roll on your left side. Depending on hospital/clinic, they may or may not put the bite block in your mouth (foam thing that keeps your mouth open - only goes on front teeth.

They will then put in the "night night" juice - you'll be out in 2 minutes or less

If they didn't put the bite block in earlier, they do it now.

They spray numbing agent in your throat, and send the scope down.

After the Night night juice, then next thing you'll know if they are waking you up.

You'll be alert, but maybe "foggy" or just aware you're not as alert/reactive as you normally are - hence the required ride home.

Trust me - When you get home, you'll be thinking - I was worried about THAT? LOL

I agree with everyone else.  I had one done on May 7th for an ulcer they found. Once they give you the iv drug they had me swallow the litocane and then gave me another dose and another swallow and then the next thing I remember is waking up. You won't remember anything after they iv injection. I was scared to death and it was very easy. The only surgery I had was the gastric bypass and I  think I was more nervous for the endoscopy. Sounds weird but I didn't know what to expect with the endo.  Good luck to you. Christine
