Extracts?

The nutritional handout from Dr. Singh's office says we are to eat at least four packets of Carnation Instant Break with No Sugar Added.  I was just opening one of my packets and it has a recipe for "German Hot Chocolate."  The only difference is the addition of 1/8 teaspoon of coconut extract.  Has anyone heard anything about if extracts can be added to our liquid diet? Extracts are fine, as long as there is no sugar in them.

Carol, When I was on Medifast for 12 weeks last summer I relied on them to jazz up the chocolate shakes!! I used raspberry a lot!!! I came up with flavors reminiscent of a box of russell stovers candies... I know but it got me through the 12 weeks without too much "pain"!!! Give it a shot. You use so little of it that it should be fine!! Enjoy!!! Cece

Hey Carol!
I know you didn't ask about CIB NSA in general but I do want to mention a few things that to me are concerning....

People may of heard me talk before about my personal opinion of CIB (I nicknamed it crap in a box)....I really do not understand why any dietician recommends this product. It is not sugar free, it is not high protein, it is not low carb, it is basically powdered milk (sugar) that is flavored....
please reconsider using carnation instant breakfast even the no sugar added variety! ***IT IS NOT SUGAR FREE**** 12 G carbs and 7G sugar in the powder! (see below for full nutrition info) It is full of carbs! and has very little nutritional value!!!!!! Then when folks ADD IT TOMILK (I think easy way to dump! Skim milk has 100 calories for 12-13g carbs, and a mere 8 grams protein add CIB NSA to it for 170 cal and 24-25g carbs! and ONLY 12 g protein!)
http://www.carnationinstantbreakfast.com/Products/PowderDrinkmix.aspx#

It has 70 calories in SF variety for only 4G protein!!!!! you need 23-30g
protein in a serving and most whey proteins will give you this for 90-150 calories! (and 0-4g carbs! NOT 12 g in the carnation instant breakfast!)

We all have opinions and this is one I strongly have that disagrees with many in the field. We allneed to make an educated and informed decision and I am not implying not to listen to your providers, I am just mentioning concerns I have about this way to get protein because I do not understand at all why it is recommended due to what I know nutritionally, what they say they want postop (high protein low carbs!) to keep sugar cravings low and reduce risk of dumping as well as lactose intolerance..True early on you get little calories in, but IMHO a good whey shake is the better choice...Things like the nectars by syntraz 23 g whey protein for 90c al, 0 g carbs and 0 g fat, now it would take 2 CIB/Milks at 340 cal total and 48 gr carbs for sme protein amount! This is what I struggle with..

I wish you well!

Hi Jamie, I did hear you say 'crap in a box' at our meeting but I assumed you were talking taste.  Lisa K. gave me some whey as a gift when I was in the hospital so I called her today and asked about it.  She also mentioned that her packet said not to use CIB.  So, I called Dr. Lindstrom's office (before I get your message) and asked what was up.  The nurse told me they still support CIB as a way to get in our protein. I do appreciate your comments and will figure out a whey (ha ha) to get my protein in without depending on CIB.  Thanks! Also, thanks for the advice on extract and syrups.  I just tried adding a couple of drops of coconut extract and it tastes a lot better. Have a good weekend! Carol D

Hi Carol, off my soapbox, now to answer your question. Extracts are fine, great way to spruce up protein shakes indeed! Other ideas:
Add sugar free syrups from torani or davinci, or use a tsp of sf/ff pudding mix powder or sf jello powder! The possibilities are endless.
www.vitalady.com has many or the SF syrups, www.netrition.com has some as well they are local in Albany...
or try a TJMaxx of marshalls they have them in store sometimes.

Hi Carol, I have to agree with Jamie about "Crap In A Box" -  Carnation Instant  Breakfast. Flavorings/extracts are fine, and DaVinci flavors are AWESOME! Best of luck, Karen
