Hello.  My sister lives in New York and has no insurance.  She asked around for cost for gastric bypass but is not believing what the hospital rates are.  We suspect the hospitals like to charge uninsured patients many times more than what they get from insurance companies.  Would anyone mind sharing what their Explanation of Benefits told them the hospital was paid for the procedure?  Either gastric bypass or Lap band info would be helpful.  thank you very very much.

Hi. I just went on my insurance website (I have Oxford) to see what was charged by the hospital. Unfortunately, I cannot see exactly how much they were paid because it says "Paid at Contracted Rate". The hospital (Mercy in Rockville Centre) charged $13405.17 each day for a total of $26810.34 !!. If you ask me, that is insanity!!!  I hope this helps. Please wish your sister the best of luck .  Hugs, Lisa

My bill was around $35,000.00.  My surgery was about 1 month ago.

The procedure alone averages 20K thats not counting the anesthesia or the hospital fees etc so the prices listed above are normal

The longest of Journeys start with a single step
(90 lost pre-surgery)

One surgeon I went to (who didn't take my insurance) said his fee was $7,300 CASH.  Had to pay a minimum of HALF up front - then they'd take the rest as monthly payments.  That was just HIS fee...no hospital, OR, other docs, etc....
