No 3-6 month diet?

I'm just curious.  From what I have read pretty much everyone has had a mandatory 3-6 (or month) dr supervised diet.   I'm just curious if anyone has been through it and not had to do it?    I'm keep being told that my insurance doesn't require it and my Surgeon and Nut seem like they are just rushing through everything.  I've only seen them once so far and they are both already talking about setting a surgery date once I get my psych eval.  which is next week.

Candi,

I am really on familiar with my Dr.  My surgeon wanted me to loose about 10 percent of my weight prior to surgery.  On my first meeting he had his scheduler set up all my appointments for the consults and then a Surgery Date was set.  About a month before my surgery I started the Medifast shakes.  I was told that the weight loss and shakes made the surgery easier and would shrink my liver making the surgery safer.  Other doctors don't have people take the shakes and are eating food right until they have surgery.

Best of luck

Dr. M doesn't require any weight loss (unless the bmi is 50+).    Just stressed that wasn't allowed to gain any weight.     He does require a  liquid diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery for everyone though.

Hi Candi, The doctor-supervised diet you refer to is required by some insurance companies.  Mine (Oxford Freedom) did not require one, although I did have to list all the diet I've been on & their approximate dates on the paperwork I received from my surgeon's office.

As far as any Medi-fast or other liquid diet, that is required by some surgeons, not all.   The only liquid diet I had to be on was for the one day before my RNY.  I have heard other doctors require anywhere from weeks to months.   Hope this helps,

Hi Candi I had surgery in 2005. My insurance did not require it at the time but my surgeon did. Everyone has different procedures. It's ok that your insurance doesn't require it, but your surgeon sometimes wants it to see if you are able to follow a 6 month program because if you can't follow a program, and prove to them that you are doing everything as followed, then you may not be able to follow a post-op life after weight loss surgery. Its is very difficult at times to do everything that is necessary. But everyone is different.

What about going on to your insurance companies website or giving them a call and asking about the required protocol so you can be pro-active and schedule your appointments as you need them? Be Well, ANDI
