Had my first meeting with Dr. Cole

Went to my first appointment with Dr. Cole on Monday--just as everyone else has mentioned he is very straight-forward and tells it like it is--which I appreciated. He discussed the different procedures and talked about what the next steps are if I decide to go that route. Now I just need to attend a support group and make my appointment for the next round. I have some family members that are trying to talk me out of it--because they know people that have had it and they told them that their doctor wasn't 100% truthful with them and if they could go back and not do it they would--so I'm getting some resistance from some people about it but I think that if I don't go forward with it then I won't be around for long-due to complications and medical issues tied to my obesity---I just want to be as well informed as I can be going forward.

Thanks Anita!! I'm still reviewing my options--the pros and cons. I'm leaning towards having it--and Dr. Cole really explained things well--I don't feel he was misleading in any way so I can make a real informed decision.

NYBA,

My suggestion for you get all the information you need to make an informed decision about your future.  I found the book Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies very informative.  Then I would suggest talking with your family about what you have learned, why you have have made your decision and ask them to support you.

I have been very lucky, my wife has been very supportive, in fact she will be having her RNY on May 2nd, about three weeks after mine.  My mother keeps telling me how proud she is of me, in making a decision that allows me to take control of my health.  My two sisters were scared for me, why is it so many people love to tell horror stories about surgery in general.  It seems like everyone, knows a cousin of a cousin that woke up in the middle of some sort of surgery, but never a direct link.  (I am a recovery room nurse and have never met a patient who claims to have been awake during general anesthesia.)

You will need a strong support group during the next coming weeks.  The people here are the best, they helped me through days when people at work kept telling me not have my RNY, some of them were barely knew me and would almost be crying begging me not to have my surgery.

You need to do what is the proper thing for you and only you can make that decision.  When you do what is best for you, your family will also benefit from this decision.

Best of luck!

Jim
