2 weeks to go and need ideas

Hi.  I have two weeks before the big day.  I want to make sure that I have what I need for my stay at the hospital and for when I return home.  I've been following the posts and I think I've put together a fairly comprehensive list (not very big) for what I need at the hospital.  For those of you that have had surgery at Albany Med what floor/wing do you stay on? I know the first week will be liquids, we already stocked with SF pops, jello and crystal light.  What about protein should I get something or wait to see if I can't do it with food first?  I need ideas for the next phase and more importantly I want to know what supplements to get. I'm having my RNY surgery with Dr. Dunnican at Albany Med.  Does anyone have a list of the supplements that are recommended?  Currently I take Effexor XR and Wellbutrin.  I think I need to have the Effexor changed as that is time released.  I am going to try and do that prior to my surgery.  My husband is having heart surgery (ICD/Pacemaker) 10 days after my surgery.  I want to make sure I am as prepared as possible so he does not have to run around getting things for me after my surgery.  We have custody of our 2.5 year old grandson who will keep my husband on his toes and plenty busy. Thanks Dominique

Dominique, Congrats on your surgery date.  You sound like you are pretty prepared.  I sure the doctor's office will give you a complete list of "dos and don'ts" Good luck...keep us posted! Rosemary

Hi, The Effexor comes in very small (generic) non-time-released tablets.  You might have to take them 2x/day.  . Take care,

Dominique, You will most likely need some type of liquid protein supplements for at least the first week after surgery. There are many types, brands and flavors. Most of us went through a bunch before we found one we liked. They come in powder or ready to drink form. I would check with your surgeon, but most post-ops need some protein supplementation immediately after surgery since you will only be able to eat such a small amount of food.  Best of luck with your upcoming surgery!  Keep us informed of your progress. Hugs, Lisa

Thanks for all of the input.  I have my endoscopy scheduled for tomorrow morning with my surgeon maybe I can ask him some questions at that time.  I'm going to go ahead and order protein samples so I have them available. I've made an appointment with my new PCP for tomorrow afternoon to get my prescription changed. Everybody has been so helpful. I really appreciate your ideas and advice. Dominique

Karen, Thank you and good luck to you also.  I can't believe how fast the time is going now. We'll be discussing our surgery experiences before we know it. I found great information here on OH and last night I went to Walmart and purchased protein powder and Pure Protein bars.  I picked up my vitamins when I was filling my new prescriptions.  I am still going to find samples of other protein powders to order.  Over the next week I plan on getting my things ready for the hospital stay. Again I've found excellant ideas here on OH. I've added one to my list. I'm going to pack my Zen (like an Ipod). I thought that would help when trying to sleep  or rest to block the noises. Dominique
