MEDICATION FOR ARTHRITIS AFTER SURGERY

I'm concerned about what medications I might be able to take for severe osteo-arthritis after the surgery.  Right now I take a high dosage of a prescribed NSAID and realize that won't be possible after surgery.    KarenB

Hi Karen Possibly after surgery as you start to lose weight your pain will be less and less. Talk to your surgeons because some medications can damage your pouch. I lost a great deal of arthritic pain after I lost all my weight. What a difference. I barely take anything now.

Drugs That Can Damage Your Pouch

In addition to NSAIDs like Advil, Aleve, etc. you want to avoid the following medications. If you are on some of these, do your own research please.

Advil, Aleve, Amigesic, Anacin, Ansald, Anthra-G, Arthropan, Ascriptin, Aspirin, Asproject, Azolid

Bextra, Bufferin, Butazolidin

Celebrex, Clinorial

Darvon Compounds, Disalcid, Dolobid

Erythromycin, Equagesic

Feldene, Fiorinal

Ibuprofin, Indocin

Ketoprofen

Lodine

Meclomen, Midol, Motrin

Nalfon, Naprosyn, Nayer

Orudis, Oruval

Pepto Bismol (contains aspeiin), Pamperin-IB, Percodan, Ponstel

As Marie stated, after losing a significant amt. of weight, you might not even need the dosages that you take now. I'm sure that your surgeon has suggestions. Good Luck. P.S. I know that my weight loss has made a world of difference for my post op pain.

First, let me preface by saying whatever route you choose, I hope it works out well for you. Next, I'll acknowledge that what I'm about to say can be (and has been) a sore subject for some.. though not so much here on the NY board, but definitely on the main board.  I realize that, and for those that may get offended, I apologize as that is sincerely NOT my intent... only to inform. Since you're pre-op, it's still not too late to at least LOOK INTO what other options are available to you.  What I'm talking about is a different procedure... rather than the RNY, given you have "severe" arthritis requiring medication, you MAY be better off with the DS (Duodenal Switch).  I don't know about the doctor you have listed, but in Rochester I know Dr O'Malley performs it (possibly same practice as your currently listed doc). If nothing else, schedule an office sit-down visit with your doc and explain your concerns, and ask what he would suggest you take post-op if you go ahead with the RNY.... then, I would talk with your orthopedist (or whoever you see about your arthritis) and ask him/her about the medication your surgeon suggested... and maybe even get a script for it and try it for a couple months to see if it helps you.  You MAY find that the only medication that is acceptable to your surgeon do not work to alleviate your pain. With the DS, and the way the stomach is formed during the procedure, NSAIDs are no more of a danger than they were preop.... meaning, unless you have other gastric issues, NSAIDs are just fine to take. This was one of the bigger factors why I chose the DS, as I have arthritis in my left knee and though it wasn't bad enough to require a prescription (yet), it was bad enough that I took two Aleve each day (one when I woke up, one after dinner)... and on "active" days, would also take a couple advil from time to time. I live just outside of Albany, requiring me to travel to get the DS.... either upstate to Saranac, down to NYC, or west to Rochester.  I only ruled out Rochester because of distance... NYC was just over 3 hour drive, while Rochester is around 4-1/2 for me. Good luck

Thank you so much for info .... I will definitely talk to my surgeon about the DS.  And, yes, he is in the same group as Dr. O'Malley.   Thank you again!  God Bless.

Sean,  That was a very informative post--I always enjoy reading what you have to say. I had no idea that the DS doesn't result in the same types of problems with NAISDS that RNY does.   Who said New Yorkers aren't polite?  We don't flame people over their choice of WLS!  (LOL) If I had known about the DS, I would have looked into it.  Karen, I wish you luck, and I think it's definately smart to research all your options. Take care,

I agree that it is good advice to talk to all of your Docs about pain management now.  I was on high doses of Relafen before surgery and still had some problems with pain and inflammation.  In preparation for surgery, I had to stop taking them.  Going form a large dose to nothing has been difficult.  Those problems are mentioned on my profile.  Now that I am losing the weight, things are getting better.  Not perfect yet but I'm hoping for improvement.  I wish that I had thought to look into alternatives earlier.
