Allergic reactions after surgery
Has anyone had any allergic reactions after surgery that they did not have before surgery?
Before surgery I was not allergic to a thing... Since Monday (10 days after surgery) I have spent most of the week either swollen and itchy or broken out in hives. At first I thought it was an allergic reaction to a new down pillow that was given to me in the hospital because it was only my head (eyes & ears swollen, itchy and uncomfortable... bumpy rash on the back of my neck) and my hands were extremely swollen. . I saw my PA for my first postop visit on Monday and she said to take Benadryl... which as we all know get's rid of the itchies but knocks you on your butt with exhaustion. Starting yesterday my entire body has been broken out in hives.
I'm going to call my dr's office as soon as they open, I just hope they don't refer me to my PCP because you always get an appointment with a new internist in the office who has no idea what is going on with you.
Has this happened to anyone else?

same thing happened to me - starting about 4 days after surgery. I had an itchy rash that eventually spread to EVERY last inch of my body - lasted about a week. Also got a yeast infection. They just told me to take benadryl also and if it didn't clear up in a week to see my pcp. I chalked it up to the high doses of antibiotics that they gave me in the hospital as a precaution - killed off all my good bacteria and things got all out of whack. Same thing happened last time I was in the hospital and had high doses of antibiotics - it totally sucks!!
Evelyn feels it's a reaction to all of the new med's I'm on... So she had me stop everything, told me to take the new otc zyrtec and then restart the nexium Sunday evening and the actigal in 3 months... Let's see how this works... :)

Amazing what a little sleep will do for our disposition!!! I am a left-side/stomach sleeper & I remember how miserable I was getting cus I couldn't get a good night's sleep right after surgery... can't sleep on my back!! That first night that I slept kinda on my side (with the help of a pillow) was fabulous!! I had a little pain but it was worth it!!!

I had the same problem after surgery with hives. My doctor had me take benadryl too. It lasted about 10 days. I think if was a reaction to the nexium pills that I was taking. 2 days after I stopped taking them my hives started to slow down. It was the weirdest thing. Best of luck to you.
Hugs,
Patty
Soubds most like a drug reaction to me. Process of elimination may help although not taking actigall for 3 months would concern me as it is meant to reduce stnes during rapid wt loss and months 1-3 are most rapid typically! Keep us posted.
