PAINFUL FEELINGS -- SUCH AS GUILT -- ARE LIKE ANY OTHER PAIN. IT’S YOUR BODY’S WAY OF SAYING, 'PAY ATTENTION.'
What is guilt?
(Appropriate & Inappropriate)
What is the PURPOSE of GUILT?
HOW DID WE LEARN GUILT?
What can guilt do to US?
~Learn that GUILT & SUFFERING IS NOT A NATURAL WAY OF LIFE~
Learn to IDENTIFY WHICH OF YOUR FEELINGS ARE JUSTIFIED AND WHICH ARE DESTRUCTIVE
Steps to overcome guilt
Learn to WORK ON 2 FRONTS:
~1~ DETERMINING WHAT IS ENOUGH FOOD
~2~ LETTING GO OF INAPPROPRIATE GUILT
We can REFUSE to feel GUILTY when we are listening to our authentic self/body signals
To disconnect feeling guilty from food must find better ways to take care of yourself..especially when feeling guilty about eating food, punishing self with food when feeling guilty…even if as a child your caregivers were unable to meet your needs and you filled them with food..
NO MATTER HOW GUILTY OR BAD YOU FEEL YOU DESERVE TO EAT WHEN HUNGRY!
Feeling bad has NOTHING to do with bodies need for nourishment.
Disordered eating is just a misguided attempt to meet your unfilled emotional needs.
Recognize the feeling of guilt: Unrecognized guilt eats at your soul. Name it; look at the monster under the bed
Be compassionate with yourself: Cloudy moods, like cloudy days, come and go. There’s no one way a person should feel. When you give yourself permission to have any feeling, and recognized that your feelings don’t control your actions, your guilt will subside.
GUILT. . . A STRAITJACKET FOR FEELING NO MORE!
Unresolved, irrational guilt drives unconscious and self-destructive behavior. We can use it as an entry point to our authentic, true self.
Certain People are Prone to Guilt
Everyone has felt guilty at some time. However, some people feel guilty much of the time. Any time they make a mistake, they continually remember it and feel badly about it. If you feel guilty frequently, you may find that you also have one or more of the following characteristics:
- low self-esteem
- perfectionist tendencies
- inability to let go of anger (at yourself or others)
- inability to forgive others who have wronged you
- tendency to be depressed
- frequent anxiety
- a need to be in control
WE probably will not overcome guilt in a day. If we have a tendency towards guilt, we will need to use tools on a regular basis to accept and learn from our mistakes. Imagine our life without guilt. Imagine how we'd feel about ourself if we didn't regret our mistakes.
-
Practice letting go. Practice acceptance. Practice forgiveness.
