Hi all!  I am in the process of getting the Lap Band- doing all my pre op tests, losing 5% of my weight (12 lbs ugh lol) etc...but I'm worried that my insurance company won't approve me because I have no comorbidities.  Has anyone been approved by the Empire Plan with no comorbidities and a BMI over 40?  I appreciate any and all advice!

Don't fret!  I had almost the identical scenario.  I had to lose 5% 12, but lost 17.  I had no co-morbidities, other than my BMI.  Add me and we can chat!!  I love my band!!!!!!  My insurance was Excellus, though.  xo

While I don't have specific experience with YOUR insurance, you shouldn't have a problem as they should be going by NIH and ASMBS guidelines, which are: BMI over 40  - or - BMI over 35 with at least one comorbidity (Diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, etc) Good luck

I have the empire government plan.  I'm not sure if that's the plan you are talking about.  I had the ryny surgery not the lab band.  I didn't have any co morbidities.  My bmi was definetly over 40.  It was in the high 50's.  I didn't have any problems with the insurance company and was approved in one day for the surgery.  If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask. Hugs, Patty

Thank you guys so much for easing my fears!  I really appreciate it!  If I lose the last 10 pounds I need to I should be going in for surgery the end of March!
