Hello Everyone,  I am in the process of completing my 6 month doctor supervised diet.  I was wondering if any of you out there had GHI  through the NYC Dept. of Education as your insurance carrier. If so, what was your experience like?  I am nervous about not being approved for the surgery.  Just don't want to get my hopes up and be denied.   Thank you for your time,  Jenny

Hey Jenny,

Call the NYC Healthline to find out the criteria.  They are the ones that will approve your surgery.  Also, contact Empire because they are your hospital carrier.  They will approve your hospital stay.  I don't have GHI, but work there, so I know a little bit about the criteria.  Best of luck!

My husband and I were both turned down twice by Healthline and GHI. My husband wanted RNY and I wanted Lapband. They didn't care about comorbidities (spelling), doctor supervised diets or anything else. We appealed after that to the New York State Department of Insurance who overturned the denials. Make sure you make copies of all of the paperwork. It was just like dealing with the Board of Ed. Good luck! Maybe they have more sense now than they had 2 years ago!

I was also denied back in 2003 by GHI.  I didn't fight it, I kind of took it as a sign that I shouldnt' have the surgery.  I wasn't 100% sure it was for me.   Now, almost 5 years later and +40 lbs.  I decided I need to try again.  This time around I am 110% sure.  I just hope everything works out.  Thanks for all the information. Wish me luck!
