Hi New Yorkers!  I think I will be traveling to NYC for BPD/DS, and am wondering if anyone has any comments to make about Drs. George Fielding, Christine Ren, Daniel Herron, or Alfons Pomp?  I'll be so grateful for any help, advice, info...anything!  THANKS!!! Melissa ETA - or Dr. Mitchell Roslin, too!

Fielding/Ren's office no longer does the BPD/DS.

Wow, that is interesting.  Do you know why?

According to Ren, they had too many problems with malnutrition due to high malabsorption.

MelissaJane, I had RNY surgery with Dr. Pomp on 12/8/04 - a little over 3 years ago.  I can't say enough good things about him.  He is a tremendously skilled surgeon and understanding of the struggles we face.  I don't think you could go wrong.  My question is, why NYC?  Why not have your surgery in Boston.  Wouldn't it be easier for your follow-ups? I wish I could have surgery here, and you'd think that since Boston is supposed to be such a fantastic center of health care, that there would be a surgeon here who does the DS - but there isn't.  I really think that's the surgery I want, so it means traveling.   Thanks so much for the info about Dr. Pomp - it's so great to hear from a patient of his!

funny (ironic) thing... my surgeon actually created the bariatric program at the Lahey Clinic, so he USED to be in your vicinity... but he's now in NYC with Roslin.

Melissa, You may want to check the DS forum. You will most likely find some people that have had surgery by these doctors. Best of luck on your journey towards the loser's bench! Keep us informed of your progress. Hugs, Lisa

I would suggest (no particular order): Pomp (Weill/Cornell) Roslin (Lenox Hill) Shah (Lenox Hill) and POSSIBLY Herron Ren, Fielding and Kurian USED TO do the DS, but apparently they don't anymore.... they always WERE heavily Band-oriented anyway. (Kurian actually assisted on my surgery... she used to be with the Lenox Hill group with Roslin/Shah, but recently relocated to the NYU group with Ren/Fielding. Good luck.

Dr. Pomp is very skilled and so very easy to talk with; he's very patient...answers all your questions. His colleague did my VSG; he'll be doing my hernia repair next month.

I've also heard from Dr. Roslin's patients that he's excellent. Best Wishes! Oh, I suggest you check out the DS Forum too!
