Hello everyone :) I have an appt. with my primary care provider to talk with him about WLS, among other things. Please pray for me that he's open-minded and doesn't give me a hard time about this approach. If I understand correctly how this works, I have to go through a program for a year, in which I try to lose weight on my own, go to support groups, see a psychiatrist, etc. before I can have the surgery. Please pray for me that my doc gives me a referral to a program in my area. Thanks so much! Jen

It really depends on your insurance and also your doctors guidlines, each one is different. When I had mine it was only 6 months and 10 lbs weight loss before surgery.

Good luck

Morning!

I didn't have to have a year supervised diets, etc. The nurse practitioner at my doc's office wrote the letter for me.  She could see by my chart that my weight was going up and up and up, having known me when I was much much smaller.  The only reason it took me so long was b/c Excellus had not approved the procedure until November 2006 for ANYONE.  Then, I had to lose 5% to show I was motivated to make changes.  I'm hoping you get to your appointment and they're ready to write the letter for you, too!  Congrats on your decision.  It's the best one I ever made!

Thank you for your response! :) I also have BCBS Excellus (mine is the Federal plan). I will be getting a consult with Dr. Graniero at Slocum-Dickson in Utica after I fill out some paperwork. Yay! :) Jen

Good luck today. My PCP is awesome about supporting me!! It was her idea 3yrs ago but I wasn't ready for it then!!! She is into follow up care as much as my surgeon's office is!! Keep in mind that every ins co & surgeon's programs are different. I have MVP & only needed a 10% weightloss prior to surgery. I went to the seminar in May & had my surgery on Oct 22nd so my journey moved pretty quickly!!!  Fingers crossed for you!!! Let us know how things went!!

Thank you for your response! My PCP referred me for a consult with Dr. Graniero at Slocum-Dickson in Utica, NY. They will be sending me some paperwork to fill out, which they will review and then schedule me an appt. Thank you again! Jen
