What are you taking for these supplements and what is good, how much?  I am deficient at both....and worried.  This is the 2nd time my blood work is coming back discouraging and I'm starting to ....panic!!  My iron in spite of supplements came back worse than 3 months ago....how is that possible when I didn't take anything before???   Only responses from "friends" appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Trish,

I take chewable iron - 120 mg.
I was on a prescription right from the beginning, but my iron showed up a little low at my 3 month checkup. I started taking chewables and will see if that helped when I go next month for my 6 month checkup.

B12 I take sublingual daily.

I wasn't taking anything in the beginning, then I started taking SLOW FE and it got worse!!  Now I'm doubling (and maybe trippling) up on it to see if that makes a difference.  My iron is dangerously LOW!!  Do you have a preferance to the chewables?  What brand do you recommend?  Can you get them in any vitamin shop?  Where do you get the B12 "sublinqual" means what???  By mouth?  I know I'm not the only one who doesn't know what this means.  Thanks for your answer.  I DO appreciate your kindness.

Hi, Sublingual means "under the tongue".  It is absorbed fast and it is over the counter.  I only know this because I am in nursing school.  Good luck on the iron thing... my papers just say to take an over the counter iron tablet.  Best Wishes,

The reason you iron is low now and not before is because those of us who had RNY have absorption problems.  Make sure the iron you buy is ferrous sulfate.  I take 2 a day that are 65mg.  You may need more if your iron is really.  Ask your doctor.  He might even want to give you a prescription for something higer or even maybe a shot once a week or month.   Don't let this go.  It's very important that you get your iron level up. I hope this helps. Joanne

Hi Trish, I also had the same problem and my GP started me on monthly shots of B-12 which has stabilized my B-12 and Iron levels.  Also, Folic Acid plays a role in how the body metabolizes the B vitamins.
