A little discouraged

I'm a little discouraged lately. I really feel like I should be doing better. I know exercise is the key, but I don't know what is holding me back. I have excuse after excuse. I keep saying that the Spring will be easier because I can do things outside, but again, that's an excuse. Well, I guess that needs to be my New Year's Resolution...to get exercise in as part of my daily life. So that's it....My promise to myself is to exercise 4 days a week for a minimum of 20 minutes. It's time to picture myself on the treadmill or Total Trainer and working my body and getting it healthy and see myself in smaller sizes.

Here's a total by month of what I have lost. I will be 5 months out on 1/6. I am down 66 lbs. so far. 41 lbs. to go.

Total loss by Month
2 weeks Preop 12
August 14.5
September 12
October 11
November 9.5
December 7
Total 66

I know how hard it is to exercise.......I wish I could make it a part of my life. I still have some weight to loose and I know I can with the help of my recumbant bike in the basement. I just have to get on it!!

Thanks Kathy! I know part of it is my depression and the holidays. I think just seeing the loss slow down already is a harsh realization that I am not doing all I can for my weight loss and health.

Rachelle, you started out with less to lose than a lot of us did so it makes sense that you might lose it slower than some of the rest of us.  I think the more you have to lose the faster you lose it so don't compare yourself to others tickers .  I think you are doing great in the weight loss area!  The exercise is going to help you a lot though.  You need to find something you like or a lot of different types of exercise and switch them around so you don't get bored.  I walk, dance, strength train, and do some pilates.  I can't do the same thing day in and day out or I would get bored with it fast and not do it.  Also, remember it's going to help your muscles and the rest of you be healthy which is REALLY important.  Hope this helps motivate you a little!   Blessings!

You are right...I need to find something different that I like and will do. A friend on the GLBT Board suggested the Wii games. We have a Wii and I'm going to work some of the sports games into my exercise. I'm also waiting for Dance, Dance Revolution to come out for the Wii. That should help a bit.

!!!!!Hiya Sweetie, What you are going through is totally normal.  Actually,it was this very forum that got me motivated to begin exercising.  I didn't begin exercising until 6 months post op, but after I did, the remainder of my weight loss just kind of melted off.  I now continue to exercise about 5 times a week.  Just think of the NIKE comercial and JUST DO IT! If we allow ourselves time to think about it, we can think of 100 things we should be doing  in place of exercsing.   How many times have you seen someone jogging as you are driving and think, I should be doing that? Have you seen commercials on various gyms and think I should be going there? So, you see the answer is very simplistic.....JUST DO IT!!!! THE SOONER WE LEARN TO STOP "SHOULDING ON OURSELVES," THE BETTER WE'LL BE" After you do something for a few short weeks, it becomes a habit. You will feel like a million bucks, I promise. My New Years resolution is to start running and participate in a 5K with some friends from this forum.  Have I ever ran before, NO,  Will I do it?  YEP.    So, the choice is yours, I'm confident that you'll do it and love every minute of it. Please keep us posted. Ciao, PS For someone who has never exercised, the Leslie Sandstone tapes are a good and easy beginning program. Good luck!

Hi Rachelle. The amount of weight that you have lost is still quite an accomplishment. I think that you are doing just fine. Instead of looking at the numbers on the scale, just think of all the health benefits you've been talking about. Concentrate on that. I personally rarely ever weigh myself but once a month because it can break/ruin my day and that's an awful thing. We all fluctuate a few pounds here and there anyhow. The winter for some people (ME) is a challenge in itself even for people who are not struggling with their weight. I truly believe that we go into the animal mode of just wanting to hibernate. It is sooo easy to go into a funk with inactivity. You are right, though. Exercise is the key to a healthier weight loss and life style. Let's all try to make that a constant in the New Year. I walk everyday but don't really have another regimen. Santa got me "Walk Away the Pounds" which is a DVD that sounds like a lot of fun. I'll let you know. In the mean time, park your car far away from the store or  take the stairs instead of the elevator- you get the drift. Anything is better than nothing at all. If I don't "see" you have a wonderful New Year.

Thanks Diane. I am promising myself to be more active. I promise myself to do at least 20 minutes of activity 4 days a week. That should get me off to a decent start.

I think alot is contributing to the way I feel....depression, the season, the holidays...we all know how it goes.

Thanks for being a friend and wonderful support.

Rachelle, Don't get discouraged...you are doing great!  I have been away from exercising because of the weather and I came down with a bad case of the shingles (boy, was that a nasty surprise).  But, I am slowly getting back to my daily walk...did 2 miles yesterday.  Take it a day at a time...keep the faith!
