Bassett Healthcare has a wonderful team.  I had Dr. Steven Heneghan, but I've had the priviledge of meeting Dr. Longhi, and Dr Strauss.  They are wonderful people.  Very compassionate, and very understanding.

They have lowered the required weight loss to 5%, for me that was 13 pounds.

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best, they're 20!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have a website... www.bassett.org

Hello OH! Below is the information for the local Schenectady, NY team. This was originally developed by Dr. Oscar Lirio, who is no longer practicing. He can be removed from any list of active doctors, sad to say.

Hope this is what you were asking for, if not, please let me know!

"10. Will My Insurance Company Cover the Cost of this Procedure?

Since the government now considers obesity to be a disease, most insurance carriers, including Medicare, will cover bariatric procedures as long as the patient is eligible. Please note that you are required to get approvals from your individual insurance plan throughout the bariatric surgery process. For managed care and HMO patients, please remember to get referrals when necessary from your primary care physician. If your insurance does not cover these procedures, you may discuss other options by calling our office at (518) 243-1313."

I have straight medicaid (due to SSI disability) and have surgery scheduled with Dr. Panemanglore on Monday 6/14/10. His office called me the day after my first visit, said he had a cancellation, and scheduled my surgery for 2 1/2 WEEKS later! I guess NO problem getting medicaid to approve it!

My Doctor is Dr. Thomas Magnuson, at Johns Hopkins Bayview Center for Bariatrics, in Baltimore, Maryland.  His whole office excepts Medicare/Medicaid.  Dr. Schweitzer, Dr. Lidor and I can't remember the other Surgeon.  I have Priority Partners (I am not sure if the patient would have to switch provider to that or not)

I have Medicare, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield Supplemental  and Medicaid so I didn't need to use the medicaid since Medicare and Empire paid for the entire thing.  My surgeon was Dr Marc Bessler at Columbia Presbyterian and I had no problem.. For Medicare to pay for it, you must have certain medical condition such as Diabetes, Hypertension, High Cholesterol, Arthritis and a BMI of 40 and over.  I think you must have the BMI plus at least 2 from that list.

I believe there is a surgeon at his office that does take Medicaid but I am not sure of his name.  I was very please with Dr Bessler.  I hope this helps.
