The bariatric clinic at University Hospital in Syracuse accepts Medicaid, although not just straight Medicaid.  They will accept you if are part of one of the many "managed care" programs that is now under Medicaid. The bariatric clinic at Strong/Highland Hospital in Rochester will take straight Medicaid though.

You guys are great!!!!! I was seriously beginning to lose hope.  I had heard that University Hosp was no longer a "Center of Excellence" and therefore wouldnt be able to take my insurance.  That was when Dr. Cunningham  was going to do my surgery. Cheers! Stephanie

My surgery was to be done by Doctor kim at Syracuse Bariatric center. I was scheduled for April 2. Now University no longer takes Healthy Ny either, seems they are leaving many of us out in the cold. I have decided to try  Dr. Weiss in Auburn ny!! Have you found a surgeon yet???

I think it would be challenging to compile a list as individual carriers may have different criteria etc. As well providers may opt out and the list to keep current could prove near impossible. This is the info I have: There are 2 accreditating bodies for bariatric surgery: The American Society of Bariatric Surgeons & The American College of Surgeons Here is the link to all ASBS Centers of Excellence: *they go by state! *some states have none you may have to travel! http://www.surgicalreview.org/locate.aspx Here is the link to the ACOS bariatric centers: http://www.facs.org/cqi/bscn/index.html http://www.facs.org/cqi/bscn/fullapproval.html
http://www.facs.org/cqi/bscn/provisionalapproval.html

Here is the ins/outs of Medicare and Centers Of Excellence/WLS etc http://www.cms.hhs.gov/mcd/viewdecisionmemo.asp?id=160

Basically according to the new policy, CMS will cover methods of bariatric surgery including laparoscopic and open gastric bypass, laparoscopic gastric adjustable banding, open and laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion and the duodenal switch. There will be no specific criteria for prior dietary weight reduction programs, recognizing that almost all surgery patients have made numerous attempts to lose weight. In addition, to optimize quality care, coverage will only be provided if bariatric surgery is performed at an ASBS/Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) Center of Excellence or American College of Surgeons (ACS) Level One Center of Excellence. According to the CMS site these are the ONLY centers
