What can I take for constipation??

It's been a couple of days since I've gone and I don't want to let it go too long.  Can I take Milk of Magnesia??   I took  it before the surgery and it seemed to work pretty well...   Or would a stool softener work better??  I'm hesitant to take anything because I'm less than 2 weeks out, but I also don't want to end up with a big problem... Thanks in advance! Flo

M O M is a laxitive, so you don't want to use that excessively. I did end up having to take it a few times with no ill effects. Colace is a better long term choice. Drink lots of water and it will get better as more solid food is introduced. Now I try to eat high fiber fruits and veggies. When in doubt, call your Dr. As I said this worked for me with no problems.  Good Luck.

My doc recommended MOM and it worked well.  I agree with Pennygirl .. drink lots of water or it can be very painful .. Ron

Flo, Oh...how I can relate...its the high-protein diet.  At my last trip to the doctor the PA gave me packets of Benefiber...but, I am 6 months out.  You might want to call the Dr's office to see what they recommend.  And just remember that you aren't ingesting much...so, you might not go every day..Good Luck. My doctor recommends taking Miralax for constipation. You have to take it on a regular basis to prevent constipation. It used to be a prescription, but I believe it is over the counter now. You mix it in any type of beverage and drink. It is basically tasteless. Good luck. Definitely check with your MD before taking anything. Hugs, Lisa

I too was told to take Mirilax and to occasionally add Sececot if needed.  I did find that as I got further out and was able to add fruit, mostly strawberries, that I was more regular. I'm experiencing constipation again because I recently started Wellbutrin, so I'm going to go back to the Mirilax as well.

My nutrionist, my surgeon and my pcp told me to take metamucil (orange flavor)

I take it every nite before I go to bed and it has help a great deal.  Of course if you can drink more that obviously would be better but sometimes that is hard to do.

Hi I take one stool softener a day. Any brand is good. I take Walgreens no-name brand. And I am regular every morning.

The best thing to do is call your doctor.  This happened to me at about 2 weeks out also.  My surgeon told me to take half of an adult dose of milk of magnesia.  Call and ask.  He might not want you to take a full dose. Joanne
