Weight Gain before Surgery

So I am a little stressed and worried...  Was wondering if anyone has run into this situation... I lost the 5% required by MVP to get approved for the surgery... Now I'm stressed that if I gain (which I am not trying to do) anything over 262 (target for approval) that they are going to cancel the surgery..

Has anyone been in this situation?  ACK! Hope everyone is well on their end of the screen.. Caro

Hi Caro, I can totally relate to your worries.  I had lost the lbs required for my surgery approval and 2 weeks prior to my scheduled date I went on a cruise with 18 of my family members.  My Dr. looked me straight in the eye and said "Maryellen, if you gain any weight at all, I will not do the surgery" he went on to explain how the liver is the first organ to lose weight and how much more dangerous it would be if I had regained any.   So, I went on my cruise, tasted just a bite of everything, did tons of walking and swimming, tried not to touch the bread baskets at every meal, drank tons of water and lost an additional 2 lbs. Just try eating high protein, low carbs, lots of water and try to do some sort of exercise daily and you'll be fine. Good luck, Maryellen

Caro I am wondering the SAME thing!  I lost 12 lbs and then gained 10 back.  I am trying to loose now.  But I fear I won't get it all off before my pre-op next week.  I want to loose it again not only because I am afraid the Dr will pospone my surgery....but also because I want my liver to shrink and get out of the way so surgery is easy.

although I am not glad we are in the same boat (because I dont like stressing and wouldnt want anyone else to stress either)

I am glad that you understand my frustration and fear.  I went back to the gym (had stopped cause my son and I were doing weekly 5 hour hikes) and got serious about the eating control again.  I figured if anything losing water weight would keep me right at target. Hope all is well on your end... it's right around the corner.. woo hoo!!

I have a friend who is in the same situation.  She also goes to the same surgical group as I do.  Her Pre-op is on Friday.  I can't wait to hear what they say to her.  I will let you know as soon as I know something. Good luck to you!!!!

dr. yatco performed my surgery.  yes, you must NOT gain.  i had too many "last meals" and dr. yatco canceled my surgery.  i gained 5 lbs in a month or so.  he said the fast weight gain makes the surgery very difficult and the liver becomes a concern.

So eventhough my MD told me that I would have to do a two day pre-op liquid diet, I decided to just forget it and started three days ago.. I can say that I am cranky as I dont know what, but feel pretty good.  My skin looks a heck of a lot better.  I go for my pre-op appointment tomorrow and am a bit nervous, because I am not sure what to expect but hey whatever happens happens.. Im steady at the 262 that MVP needed me to at..  Will power will power!!!   I have it!  Kinda sort of.. it's hard when I have a roomie that eats and drinks delicious stuff... Arg!  Must fight it..
