After surgery question

I think my nerves are starting to get the best of me.  I'm worried about what kind of diet I will need to follow the first month after surgery.

I met with the nutritionist who gave me a sample menu, but after reading the board, searching for my own tips, and talking to other people, I have to say I am a little discombobulated... Some say to wait to buy - others say buy before the surgery.. I know it's up to personal preference, but I would still like some input.. The first two weeks is what concerns me the most.  Im a single mom, so I will still need to cook full meals for my son, yet take care of myself.. ACKK! Anyhow, I hope everyone is doing well on their end of the screen! :)

Has your surgery been scheduled?  I live alone so I had to get a least a fews days supplies in the house.  The first couple of weeks is a mostly a liquid diet.  Just make sure you have sugar-free jello, popicles, water, etc in the house.  I had my vitamins too.  I had a good friend that took me to the store when I was able to stock up a little more.  I did have a problem with taste changes right after the surgery...but, I am back to normal now.  Everybody is different.  Being anxious is VERY normal...don't worry.  I was exactly like you being worried about the food thing.  It will come... Yes!  Woo Hooo.. My surgery is November 16th.  I bought some vitamins and need to stock up on others i.e. iron, right kind of calcium and so forth. I hope this is not to gross, but with regards to using the restroom, did you have any issues or pain?

I REALLLY appreciate the info and hope i'm not being to blunt..

I never had any issues using the rest room after surgery,,however others have.  I was told to get a wooden spoon ready in case,,I never needed it :)  It will be uncomfortable to move,,only because of your incisions but thats normal.  Just take it easy and you should be fine.  Good luck,,and know that it will be over in a few weeks after surgery and you'll feel good as new and well on your way to a better you!!!

Be careful iron can make you very "backed up". Your NUT and or surgeon should tell you what kind of vitamins and supplements to take. And YES, OMG YES there are restroom issues, from not being able to go to going nonstop to cramps, gas, etc... As for food the previous poster gave great advise sugarfree icepops, jello, pudding, water, crystal light, protein shakes or muscle milk (lite).

201 pounds lost since surgery!! And I'm 2 1/2 inches taller too!!

And YES I still eat Carbs and Fats but I know what portion control is!!

Surgery Date: 6/5/07

I agree that as far as the protein drinks and stuff dont spend alot of money because our tastes do change a little post op.  But you can stock up on the sugar free jello, ice pops etc.... i also had a pot of chicken broth made by my grandma and frozen in little tiny containers....i had sugar free applesauce to take my crused meds...i had a sippy cup so i could learn how to sip and not gulp and hurt myself lol.....i had a baby plate and spoon.....i had sugar free stallone puddings on hand ..... Everyone is different with regards to bathroom issues post op as well.  I had none but i know of plenty that were either one extreme or the other,....constipated or diarrhea.....you will have to wait and see what the surgery brings you... Its a very exciting time....you will do great.  LisaMarie

Typical for sure!  I stocked up, not knowing what I would really be facing.  It was 2 weeks worth!  My son came home from college 2 weeks after my surgery for the summer.  (he was also home just after my surgery)  I didn't mind cooking.  Wasn't really hungry! Breathe...lol
