New here and question for those who had the bypass

Hi my name is Janine, I had my bypass on Sept 6th and am just about 7 weeks out of surgery. So far things aren't going so well.  I was allergic to all the pain medication and had to ride it out solo without pain meds (which sucked in credibly ).  After a 6 week leave from work, I just returned to work this week at half day and am barely pulling through it. I'm weak, exhausted, tired and spaced out. Plus I have some pain, which at this point I can take Tylenol.  My question is this. I can't keep any food down. I've been tolerating what my surgeon, nutritionist and  Nurse Practictioner have given to me. I can eat half a hardboiled egg, or half a scrambled egg with some cheese.  I can eat yougart and special K cereal. I have been doing so for about a week before work. Suddenly  I get into work and I am not able to eat anything or keep anything down except som wheat crackers.  At this point its like I am bullemic. I am always throwing up. NP says to go back to liquids for a week, such as soups, broths, some puddings and sugar free jello.

Has anyone experienced this same upset or set back with their diet and routine?

I am also brand new to this.  I had my lap band surgery about 3 weeks ago.  I find I can eat anything, just like before the surgery.  I did this because I  I was never a good dieter  strong for a few weeks, then a complete failure when it came to sweets.  I am feeling the opposite of you.  No restriction, no change in how I am able to eat.  I feel like maybe they forgot to do the procedure.  Anyone else have this happen?   Should I go get a fill immediately? I would really appreciate any response.  I am feeling so depressed that this isn't working. [email protected]

To Zissoushively. There are some Happy Banders that post here who would be able to give you advice better than I can. I had RNY. I do know that this is fairly common until you have your first fill. Follow the Doc's guidelines and keep drinking your water to give you that "full" feeling.  It will all come together..you'll see. Good Luck and please don't be discouraged. That only helps to sabotage our efforts. Take Care.

Hi, Being tired and sore is completely normal.  Just don't overdo.  It took me a long time to get used to "real" food.  I ate whipped cottage cheese, oatmeal, lo-fat soup for quite a while.  Just try to get your protein...and take it easy and good luck! Rosemary

Sometimes I can eat and then other times all food makes me sick. Thank everyone for all your thoughts and advice

There is no rhyme or reason why some WLS patients have a harder time than others. Keep an eye on this and also keep in close contact with the surgeon's office if you feel something is not right. As far as the difference in being able to keep food down at home as opposed to work...I have a theory. It seems at home, I am much more relaxed than when I am in a social situation. I don't know if it's because I "perceive"  that perhaps all eyes are on me at a party or dinner. It has gotten so much better with practice.  Maybe this is what might be the problem for you. At work , you might feel more uptight - especially if everyone knows that you had surgery. Maybe you feel that everyone is watching what you put in your mouth. Give it all some time. I know it's hard when you don't feel 100%. IT WILL GET BETTER. Take Care.

Has your doctor brought up the possibility of a stricture?  I had my Lap RNY on 9/18/07 and had a stricture which was causing me to throw up almost everything I tried, including cream of wheat.  I had to go get an endoscopy last week to stretch the stricture, since the doctor could only stretch it so far, I had to go back yesterday and get it stretched to 15mm.  I am feeling much better and will be able to eat normal things tomorrow.  I can't wait to actually chew on something!!

Janine, I had the same thing happen to me; I was keeping food down then at 3 weeks coldn't keep anything down.  The doctor did an endoscopy & saw a stricture.  the scope stretched it a bit, but I was still so early out he couldn't insert a balloon.  2 weeks later they used a scope w/a baloon attached, and bye bye stricture.  It does happen, it's not a big deal, and if it's the only problem I have, I'll be very happy! If after the week of liquids, you're still vomiting, then I'd definately recommend an endoscopy. Also, as Rosemary said, whipped cottege cheese was (is) a lifesaver. Keep us posted,
