Im about two weeks post-op open rny.  I was just wondering if any of you had pain on the right side of your incision??Its not there all the time but its almost like a pulled muscle kind of pain?Surgeon said it was normal, but i was just wondering how long it lasts and if anybody has any experience with it.  I notice it ALOT after walking of doing household chores. Other than that im doing really well! Thanks!Michelle

Pain on your left and right is very common. Be aware that the more you do the worse it gets. It is more common to have this intense pain on the left side. Your doctor had to cut through layers of muscle and the stiching is deep within the muscle as well. I had this pain on the left side for about 2 weeks post op (I am now 3 weeks post op and doing great), but at my appointment last week, I asked this question as well and that is what I was told. I was also told that it will get better, but once I start working out again, I should anticipate this pain again.   Reason being, is that I will be working and using the muscles again and more focused and thus, pain at that point is not uncommon as well.

My only thought of concern is that your pain is more intense on the right. Do you have drains in? Is the pain in the lower side of your abdomen? Do you have a fever? Are you sick to your stomach? If you have any of these things, call your doctor ASAP! Good Luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply.  i did call the surgeon and he said that what i was describing was normal.  I dont have any drains, no fever, no nausea, and have had no troubles with any foods or liquids.   It is just SO uncomfortable.  The pain is more in the middle not toward the bottom.  I just thought i would see if anybody else had this and if there a light at the end of the tunnel! I cant imagine returning to work at this point!!!  Take care Michelle

Hi Michelle, I was feeling pretty damn well after my first week out that I was driving and cleaning etc and then I got this pain that you are describing but it was so intense and it hurt so much that I couldn't help but cry.  My sister ended up calling an ambulence and I went to the hospital.  When I got there, Dr. Holliver called me back and pretty much told me what they told me at the office visit that it's a type of muscle spasm.  Once he explained it that's exactly what the pain felt like.  My stomach was even rippling like it did when I was pregnant.  It was so weird and hurt so much.   The dr told me to go home and rest and take some pain pills.  I was them the next morning and gradually the pain lessoned.  I was also told I'd have that pain again when I started working out.  (I can't wait.)  Now I'm a month post op and I feel fine.  Some tightning in that area but all and all I feel fine.  Try not to over do it.  Even though you feel fine on the outside it still takes 6-8 weeks for the inside to heal.  I'm glad you're feeling better.  Keep us posted.

Hi Michelle, The pain lasted about 2 days but with the pain pills and just relaxing I was ok.  Then it subsided on day 3 and it just more of stretching than a pain. Now at a month out, I just have a little soreness in that area but that's usually if I push myself too much some days with chores etc.  I am waiting for the ok on the 18th so I can go back to curves and start an exercise program.  Hang in there.  It does get better.
