Hello Everyone!

Many of you may know that I love Achieveone protein drinks. At 10 months out I still chose to have 1 a day for breakfast. When someone from OH or from a support group asks for a suggestion on a good tasting protein drink....I always recommend Achieveone.

Well, I posted a response the other day on OH and a women contacted her local shop regarding them. She was told they do not and will not carry them because there have an ingredient that is known to cause cancer!

I did my research and below is what I found!

I had to share it!!!!!

Thanks,
Britt  ***note my good friend pennygirl (diane) pointed out - this is also in crystal light and MANY other things we are probably consuming ...sorry if I got anyone excited  I think I over reacted ....Sorry gang thanks Diane :)

Acesulfame-K Toxicity Info Center

Back to Health/Nutrition Page. / Back to Aspartame / NutraSweet Toxicity Info Ctr..
From the book SAFE FOOD by Michael F. Jacobson, Ph.D, Lisa Lefferts and Anne Garland
"Acesulfame K, sold commercially as Sunette or Sweet One, was approved by the FDA in 1988 as a sugar substitute in packet or tablet form, in chewing gum, dry mixes for beverages, instant coffee and tea, gelatin desserts, puddings and nondairy creamers. The manufacturer has asked the FDA to approve acesulfame K for soft drinks and baked goods. The public is waiting for an artificial sweetener that is unquestionably safe. But this one isn't it. Even compared to aspartame and saccharin (which are afflicted with their own safety publems - see below), acesulfame K is the worst. The additive is inadequately tested, the FDA based its approval on tests of acesulfame K that fell short of the FDA's own standards. But even those tests indicate that the additive causes cancer in animals, which means it may increase cancer risk in humans. In l987, CSPI urged the FDA not to approve acesulfame K, but was ignored. After the FDA gave the chemical its blessing, CSPI urged that iat be banned. The FDA hasn't yet ruled on that request."
From CSPI's web page:
... acetoacetamide, a breakdown product, has been shown to affect the thyroid in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Administration of 1% and 5% acetoacetamide in the diet for three months caused benign thyroid tumors in rats. The rapid appearance of tumors raises serious questions about the chemicalÕs carcinogenic potency."

Britt, I too love the Achievone drinks as well.  Since they have been so hard to get I'm going to have to start to try others.  Let me know if you find one that is simular to the Achieveone drinks. Hugs, Patty

Hi Britt. Your tears are smearing my post because I know that Achievone was your favorite. I did a little research as well. It seems that if I am correct and read right, Crystal Light and Sugar free jello contain acesulfame potassium too. I'll bet most of the low - cal snacks have it.  Are you going cold turkey or chalking it up to headline hysterics. Most of the diet stuff is made of non-nutricious ingredience. I try to stay away from it for the most part but I don't think that having it every once in a while will kill you. What do you think? The same was said about Sweet N Low and Equal a few years ago. I just don't know.
