I have an infected hematoma.
I had my first post-op visit yesterday and it would appear that I still have my lovely infection. Donna and Dr. Garber are concerned with the color of fluid and of course the smell. He does not think it is a leak as he said my output would be around 100cc. He does however think that I developed a Hematoma on the left side which has become infected. Because of this I STILL HAVE BOTH DRAINS!!! They have to stay in for another week (please hit me with a hard object). He did say I could come back and see Donna next week so I made my appointment for Wednesday at 11:30. I am also on another antibiotic at this time as well.
Otherwise I am doing well. Pain is almost down to nothing and I am just about getting a hang of this new way of eating so, I will tough it out. I really have no other choice.
Has anyone else ever experienced this?
Hey Lauren,
I am so sorry you are going through this.. I have to say I know exactly what you are going through. I expereinced something similar I also had an infection and a hematoma (so he thought) my drain filled with blood I had the smell and the yucky drainage as well i too had to leave the drains in . It did clear up after a while and got the drains out eventaully. Hang in there I know it totally stinks and a little scary too but your in great hands with Dr. Garber he took great care of me and knew exactly what to do.Everything he said would happen happened so I trust him and you will be fine. Feel better!!!!!
Hugs
Lori
Thank you for your support. It is good to know (well not good that some have gone throught this), but just good to know that this is a "common" side effect of surgery, vs. something that could be more complicated and no one knows about. In my world the glass is always half full!
I will be sure to keep you posted. Thanks again!
Lauren,
Yes! I was home for 2 days, no more drains in place, and developed a low-grade temp. As a precautionary measure I called my surgeon. Long story short, I spent the next 10 days back in the hospital on IV antibiotics, felt Wonderful except for the times my fever went over 103 - then I was goofy.
There was really no pain, I was up and walking the halls day and night out of boredom, Part of the reason I was in so long was that it was difficult to diagnose the origin of my fever. then I developed Thrush from the antibiotics and had an allergic reaction to the meds. Other than looking as if I had been eating Polar Bears, I felt pretty good.
You will get used to eating before too long. Then you will have to figure out the maintenance eating method. No problem, we will help.
Annette
