Last meal syndrome??

For the last week  or so  I've been feeling like I should get to all my favorite restaurants, and cook all my favorite meals because I  won't be able to have them for a very long time, or maybe  not ever again.  Now my surgery isn't until November 5th and I'm feeling  like this already!?!   Is this relatively normal???  Or am  I unconsciously justifying eating anything I want??  I really don't want to gain more weight and  I'm not totally pigging  out, but I'm also not really watching what I eat and curbing my impulses like I usually try to do.  Anybody else feel like this before surgery?? I did this the last week before I started the 2 week liquid diet. I didn't over eat and didn't gain weight, but I did have the foods that I knew I wouldn't be able to have for a while.

I personally think it's normal.

Hi.  I didn't exactly have a food orgy, but I did treat myself to certain sweets that I knew would be out of my life shortly. Just try to maintain your weight and not gain. Good Luck. Diane ~~~

This is completely normal!  I did my farewell tour also....pizza, wings, french fries with gravy, etc.  I actually got sick of fried foods...hehehe. Now fried foods don't really appeal to me...I just hope that lasts! Rosemary

I didn't eat anymore than I had been, but made sure I had the foods I like.  Now, I can still have anything I want, but have chosen not to!  A girl I work with binge ate...LOTS and LOTS!  I was sick to my tummie watching it.

Hi there Flo,  I felt like that to an extent and ended up eating my way up to having sugar that was so high (374), my surgery had to be rescheduled until the endocrinologist helped me get it under control with meds.  I didn't gain any extra weight but it was still frightning and also upsetting to be postponed.  It turns out the postponement was only 3 weeks but at the time I didn't know for how long.  Please eat in moderation the things you'll know you won't have for a while, but remember that food is part of the problem we got where we are today.  (I did have a Pizza a few times, the days leading up to my surgery date.) I am still on the puree stage of the bariatric diet but truthfully I do not even crave or miss most of the food I'm not able to eat.  (except for the cheesy pizza)  I know now the cravings I have are more head hunger than real hunger.  Here I am straying from the topic...... It is normal to be going thru what you're going through.  Hang in there!!!  Jessica

Ya its normal

I bbqd myself a 48 oz steak as my last meal, and before that hit all my favorite buffets, ate ice cream, mcdonalds, whatever.  I gained about 10 lbs during that time I got my insurance approval/surgery date, till 2 days before surgery.   And also u want to make sure u got enough vitamins and minerals in your body when they do the pre surgical testing. Its like saying farewell to the old you.  I have no regrets doing so.

I was wondering if I was crazy wanting turkey dinner like crazy.  I guess I keep thinking I am going to miss my Mom's juicy turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatos, baked corn caserole, upside down cake, pistacio salad, stuffing home made, and most of all pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving dinner.  She cooks the best.    And then I wonder how I gained all this weight.  Thanks to her for that, she does make sure we all eat right.  Jaimee

Flo, It's definitely normal to feel this way but I would heed some caution doing so.  You WILL eat again and ALL the things you used to love....you will just eat them less and in smaller quantities.  Trust me, you will NOT miss them once the weight pours off of you.  It is also not safe for you to be binging like this just prior to your surgery.  For one, it is SO important for you to lose as much weight as possible to shrink your liver down for a successful surgery.  Even though I lost 12 of the 10 lbs required of me prior to surgery, my surgeon still almost had to open me up during the laproscopic procedure because it was difficult to get under it to get to the stomach.  I am not trying to frighten you but this surgery is no easy task and not to be taken lightly.  You decided on this life changing surgery, do not let your mind take you to the last meal syndrome on a daily basis.  I had my surgery on Oct 23, 2006 and by Thanksgiving I had a normal plate of food but much smaller quantities than I had normally would have eaten which is what got me to the MORBIDLY obese state we are all in prior to surgery.  My surgeon also threatened me and told me that if I did not cease having all these "last suppers" he would cancel the surgery  until I was mentally prepared.  If you continue to gain weight, your surgeon may see this as an indication that you are not willing to follow the rules once you have your surgery so you might not be prepared.  So, just take it easy, try to eat like a normal thin person and don't overdo it.  Remember why you are doing this in the first place.  The food only ends up in the toilet anyways.  BE good to you!

Thanks to everyone for responding.  It's nice to know I'm  not the  only one who has felt  like this.   I'm not acting on my impulses to eat all my favorite stuff, but I was worried that I even HAD the impulses.  It actually made me wonder if I was mentally prepared enough for the surgery, like Trish mentioned in  her post.  It sets my mind at ease to know it's pretty common, and that all these months and months of preparation haven't been for nothing. Thanks again Everyone!
