I have been doing research on lap band surgery and am trying to find a surgeon in the new york city/brooklyn area.

Can anyone share their choice of doctors and the experience with me? I appreciate any help I can get. Karen

I would not reccomend my Dr. Kurian because I think the follow up and pre surgery information session stinks.  I do reccomend but is lenthy the program at the Staten Island University Hospital.  I went to the introduction with my sister and it was very informative and seem to really care about pre and post op surgery.  Not sure of the Dr. Names but if you look it up on the web you will find it.  Email me privately if you have any other questions.  What type of insurance to you have.  What is your BMI?

Dr. Fields and his partner, Christine Ren are the best around!  They're in the city, somewhere!  I had my band done in Syracuse and they had ALL GOOD STUFF to say about both of them!

Dr Fielding and Dr Ren (I *THINK* they're married too, not that THAT matters though) are out of NYU....Dr Kurian is now partners with them after leaving Lenox Hill

Thanks, Sean.  I knew they were a "couple"...lol  My sis is considering WLS.  She lives in the Bronx, works in Manhattan.  I was just amazed to hear about them at one of my own appts.  They must be great!!!

Lap Band on 06/13/07 with
Cheri, I just posted a request for information on a good lap band surgeon in Syracuse and then saw your post.   My sister lives in Utica and has heard horror storiesa bout the quality of the one or two lap band surgeons there.  She would like to find someone she can trust in Syracuse, but since I live in northern Virginia, I am no help to her. Could you please let me know what doctor did your surgery, where it was done and if you would recommend the doctor and the hospital?

YIKES!!!  Tell her to RUNNNNN from the UTICA docs!!!  Graber lost her privilege to practice at the Hamilton Hospital!!!!  I went to Howard Simon who was phenomenal!!!  I owe him my life, because he saved my life!  He practices out of SUNY Health Science Center/ Upstate Hospital.  I loved every moment working with him and his staff even prior to surgery!

You or your sis can certainly call me I live in Hamilton.  Send me a message for the info.

I will  help wherever I can!

dr kurian rocks!  I don't agree with the other poster...she is very dilligent about after care...and wants to see you the rest of your life....so I think it's up to u to go to support groups and check in with her post op....she is probably one of the best surgeons in NYC! good luck! Marla

They are married, and I've only heard good things about them both.  Their office seems to be a little discombobulated (sp.) but I think that's from sheer volume.   Heard mixed remarks about NYU Hospital, buy, hey, I LOVE my surgeon and Mercy Hospital was no picnic. Hope this helps.

I am in a program with Cornell Weill/New York Presbyterian.  It's comprehensive (pre-op to post-op), everyone works together, they're very organized and efficient, and I'm very pleased with them so far (I'm in the third month of my medically supervised diet, which is a requirement of my insurance company, not necessarily Cornell).  My surgeon is Gregory Dakin and my nutritionist is Jaime Sherry.  I especially like that I can e-mail them and they respond quickly, even the surgeon. I had the opportunity to go with Fielding or Ren (they're in my plan) but my PCP felt that New York Hospital was not as good as New York Presbyterian. Here's the link for you to investigate for yourself: http://cornellweightlosssurgery.org/ Good luck.
