Opinions on NYU?

Hey sean, it was just my opinion....but  Dr. Ren (from what i've obeserved on this forum) is a very GUN HO about the Lap band....in fact, to the point where people have said that they were discouraged about seeking other surgeries or revisions when the lap band didn't work for them.  While Kurian is an excellent surgeon.....if I were going to have the lap band, I'd go with Dr. Ren.  From my understanding Dr. R uses a more aggressive fill method to get the fastest and best results. As far as NYU surgeons doing the DS......I'm sure all of them would be qualified to do the DS, but if it were me, I'd go with a surgeon that has performed more of them on a regular basis.   While Dr. K has performed the DS, she isn't known for performing the DS....she is quite well known for performing the RNY though...so I'd say if you were going to have the RNY,she'd be the woman. Again just my opinion, and in no way am i discouraging anyone from using any doctor. Scott

I just noticed you are still in the decision making process for choosing a surgery...have you looked into the DS?   As a former SMO person (a person with a BMI over 50) the DS  has been a lifesavor for me.  According to a university of chicago study, the DS is the most effective surgery for the SMO because it allows them to lose the greatest  amount of excess weight as compared to the RNY....a Dr. Gagner study confirms that finding, DSers lose a higher percentage of fat over RNY patients. There isa  DS forum on OH that youc an gather some information.......it is food for thought. As for the hospital thing....WLS Is a life altering experience, you need to find the BEST surgeon and the BEST hosptial......at least in my opinion. Scott

As a former patient of Dr. Kurian I was very impressed by her credentials.  Her is my opinion....Surgery was great.  She is a nice and friendly doctor.  Pre Op did not hear much from her.  Felt a bit rushed.  Why did I move forward?  She did the surgery on Al Roker and co wrote WLS for Dummies.  I checked out her education creditional and any complaints logged etc.  Post OP still felt a bit rushed was not impressed with the long term post op which is extremely important.  She was formerly affiliated with Lenox hill that office was a bit disorganized as well.  Now she is at NYC that office (was there a few weeks ago) and is a bit disorganized. Now my comparison.  Went with my sister to a WL program and information session with Victory Memorial in Staten Island and I can't tell you the top notch doctors that run that WLS.  The session was very informative answered every question even if it took more than a few minutes.  They do alot of pre op testing and have a great follow up program after the surgery.  The girl who does appts will always get back to you.  It just seems more organized.  The only thing that bugged me is that you had to pay cash $150 for the information session.  Not sure why if insurance covers it.

Thanks to you all! After comparing both NYU and Lutheran Medical, I have decided to stay with Lutheran. I prefer the smaller clinic and the more one-on-one approach I got there. I'm glad I checked out a second place just to be sure, and I'm very grateful for all of you sharing your thoughts and opinions with me. Stay tuned to see how it goes!!!!

I had my surgery at Maimonidies and am now doing my aftercare with NYU.  I TOTALLY regret not using Dr. Fielding/Ren from the beginning - NYU WLS program is top notch. I live a few blocks from Lutheran and would not use them for ANYTHING.....just my .02 cents.....

I agree with you - I went to NYU from Orange County -- facility aside - the doctors are just top-notch.  I'm only going to NYU overnight for surgery.  I'll be sticking with the surgeon for a lot longer. I went to see my PCP years ago (2003) and my doc then told me about WLS...yes, that's how long it took me to decide.  Anyway, he had a nurse that had it..would not have ever guess.  She conspiratorily told me..."Pssst!  Go to Dr. Ren- she is the best!"  I never forgot that.
