I'm 11 days out of surgery and the last few days I've been hungrier (sp?) than normal?  Any suggestions?  Am I eating enough at my meals?

I know I had "head hunger" really bad at about the same time...I just had to stop and evaluate and ask myself if I was really hungry or if in fact it was just the craving....usually it was the craving...Good luck to you....

What kind of program are you on?  Clear liquids, full liquids, purees?  How much did they tell you to eat in one sitting?  Are you drinking and eating at the same time?   About ten days out I had my first real bout with head hunger because there was food around me that smelled and looked so good.  I thought I felt hungry, but when I stepped back and really listened to my body, it wasn't hungry.  This is a very mental battle that we wage...and I'm only about ten days further than you are...so we have a long road ahead of us.  This week I've found it much, much easier to accept that I'm not hungry and when I feel the need to eat, the things on my program are more than sufficient to satisfy me.   When you think you're hungry stop and really examine how your body actually feels.  More than likely it's all in your head.  If it's not, and you really are hungry...maybe you should call your nut. and get some ideas on how to fill up for longer.

thank you ladies for helping me out with my question.  I kinda figured it was head hunger but wasn't sure.  Britt......you look wonderful and I can only hope and pray that i have th success that you have had.

Greenshirt......I'm on full liquids and my doctor told me to eat til I was satisified. He told me that my meals should take no longer than 15-20 minutes.  I havent had a problem with the eating or the time.  I don't drink while i eat either.  I stop drinking 30 minutes b4 meals and don't drink for 45-60 minutes after I eat.

Unfortunately the pleasure center of the brain NEVER forgets what feels good. That's why addictions are so darn hard to overcome.  I believe that you are just remembering what foods that you used to be eating or would have had. Yep...it's head hunger. Just ride through it and have more water instead.  It will get better for you as you progress to solid food. Take Care~~ Diane

Sure sounds like you're doing everything right.  I agree that it's probably all mental and you can beat it!   We're on the same diet right now and one of the things that I'm really enjoying is baked ricotta cheese thinned out with tomato puree.  It's like eating the filling of lasagna and it really stays with you for a long time.  My nut also said it was fine to puree up hearty soups and stews that are filled with soft meats that puree well.  They stick to the ribs too!   Today I'm eating cottage cheese for lunch and it tastes wonderful!

I'm on full liquids still bc I  came out with a virsus from the hospital and the doctor just wanted to make sure I was ok with the full liquids so he told me to stay on one more wk.  I cant wait to eat something with abit more constistency then liquids.  You said you eating baked ricotta cheese thinned out with tomatoe puree....yummy.  Do you bake it and it so how long?

I mix it up like I'm making the filling for lasagna....ricotta cheese, egg, mozzarella cheese, seasonings...and bake it in a small casserole.  Then, when I want to eat it I just add sauce to it and mix it until it's creamy.  It's like heaven!   In my support group people also talk about making it as a dessert, where they mix flavored extracts and Splenda in with the ricotta...that way they're getting a dessert type of dish that's high in protein.  I haven't tried that yet because I'm not looking for any more sweets..I like the savory stuff much better.
