I would get another blood test. After my surgery, Dr. Garber came in & said that my hemoglobin was so low that I might need a transfusion, but he wanted to repeat it. The next one was fine. Even if the test was correct, you should ask your doc what could have caused such a drop.

BTW, I had a transfusion 5 years ago; I hope you don't need one, but it wasn't a big deal for me.

Please keep us posted.

I know you are, Alexandra. Please call your doc in the a.m to ask how this could happen so fast, to possibly repeat the test & to see if there's something you can do between now & the surgery to build your hemoglobin up.

Well, Hgb doesn't usually drop that much in that amount of time unless there is some bleeding some where. Black tary stools, a prolonged menses something like that or a history of anemia. You need to call your doctor's office and make sure they had the right patient's results then ask if they could redo it. If it is still low then they will advise the best treatment. It could be a mistake or you may be truley low in either case they are making sure you levels are good before you have your surgery. Also make sure you are hydrated for the blood draw as dehydration will skew the levels in some results.

If they told you not to eat or drink before then you did it right. Sometimes they are looking for a fasting blood level for glucose and cholesterol but usually you can drink water. Call the office, tell them your concerns and ask if it should be taken again because of the decrepency. Also ask the person when they order the bloodwork if you should eat or drink. Sometimes they are so used to everything they forget to give the simple but essential information. Don't be afraid to ask questions: it is your surgery not theirs. Leslie

Hello Alexandra, I would talk to the doctor immediately, the low hemoglobin can cause mayhem for your big day.  My surgery was cancelled (postponed) due to low hemo, I have always been anemic.   I hope you have already spoke to your surgeon.  From what you mentioned about it being fine recently, unless you have a very very heavy mensa you should be fine.  Wishing you the best of luck.  I am still trying to get mine up from a 8.7.   Hope and pray all goes according to plan...
