liquids vs. solids

So I am hoping I am all just too new to this to have a clue...at one week out, we, as Horseheads patients, are still on clear liquids. Should I be feeling full on these? Because I am not. I'm not really hungry, but not full either. The instructions that come home from the hospital say we should be taking chicken broth, 100% fruit juice and milk in at a rate of about 2 oz every 15 minutes. I have no trouble at all drinking double that. I am drinking an 8 oz glass of skim in about 20-25 minutes. So I am hoping that when solids are added, there will be a whole different feeling of fullness involved. I'd hate to think I could gain weight on a clear liquid diet! Or that that feeling-full mechanism isn't working up to snuff. Any thoughts? Thanks Gang!

Hi there. It could have been me a few months back writing this post. I didn't get that full feeling either and was concerned because I could also eat a 6 oz. container of yogurt. ( Nutritionist said that the amt. was fine for me.) I was concerned because other freshly post ops were only able to eat 2-3 oz. The reason is that the liquids go through you at a faster rate than solids. This includes the consistency of yogurt, pudding and jello. Believe me when I tell you that you will know when you are full as you enter the solid food stage. There is a point when you will be very aware even to put down a spoonful in mid air because you can't fit another drop in. It is a much different kind of full feeling and it took a lot of practice to get used to...it still takes some getting used to. Don't worry, your new tummy is working just fine. Take Care~~ Diane

Hi, I think you are completely normal.  Once you add some solids you will feel the "full" feeling.  To me it feels like an air bubble...then I know I've had enough.  My biggest problem was eating slowly...I am a "wolfer" lol.  Every day is an adventure...it is nice to feel that you are getting healthier every day. Good Luck, Rosemary

Good Morning Rosemary, I'm still a wolfer and that is a problem for me. I started eating meals with a shrimp fork and a baby spoon and that has really helped tremendously. I still go out to dinner with  a shrimp fork in my purse. If i'm going to pay for a meal i'm going to enjoy it and that means not throwing up when i've put too much in the pouch, little fork helps! I thought it was just me too. I was never a one or two tablespoon person, even from day one (I came home on mushies) It was only when I tried chille that I felt full.

I was on pureed food when I got home so I can not offer much info but I do know that for a while I was not hungry nor was I full at any time. It was a weird feeling that I had to learn and only eat the amounts that they said to make sure I was getting enough and not to much. Just stick to the plan and it will work out and you will learn! Hey I am still learning and I guess that will be like that for the rest of my life. Take care hun and I hope you are feeling good?.....
